Millersville, Pa. -- After an impressive 5-4 victory over a tough conference rival last week, the tables were turned for the Millersville men's tennis team Saturday, as it lost a heart-breaker at home to Dowling College, 5-4.
The loss to the 2-8 Golden Lions was the Marauders' first since their win streak of eight-straight dual matches was stopped by PSAC rival Bloomsburg on April 8.
The Marauders were retired consecutively through the first four singles matches as sophomore Drew Slocum, freshman Donald Swantko, junior Andrew Sorgi and senior Mark Treires all fell to Dowling in straight sets.
Freshman Henry Ben notched the first Marauder singles victory, beating Dowling's Mike Sinclair 6-3, 6-2. The victory was followed by a refreshing performance from freshman Erik Wright, who ended singles play by delivering a devastating 6-0, 6-0 loss to Golden Lion Kevin Dunn.
In doubles play, the Marauders fared better despite losing the first match. Marauders Swantko and Ben defeated Dowling's Sanlo Gonzalez and Pedro Munoz 8-3. Freshman Corbin Holland and senior Marty O'Hora win the final doubles match of the day for the Marauders, defeating Mike Sinclair and Kevin Dunn 8-5.
The Marauders will face perhaps their toughest test of the season tomorrow as they head to Kutztown to take on the top team in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference. The Golden Bears are 4-0 in conference play and are 10-4 overall. The action is scheduled for 2 p.m.
