Chestnut Hill, Pa. – The Millersville women's tennis team opened its 2008 fall campaign in style, downing homestanding Chestnut Hill 7-2 Friday afternoon.
The Marauders have now won 11 of last 12 season openers dating back to 1996. Last season's opening loss to California (Pa.) snapped the impressive 10-match run. The 2007 season ended with a disappointing 3-9 record, but the 2008 squad showed no signs of a hangover, dropping only one doubles match and one singles match the entire afternoon.
Millersville's No. 2 doubles team of #Lindsay Knappenberger# and #Michelle DeStefano# earned the team's first point with an 8-5 victory. The No. 3 tandem of #Shauna Powers# and #Samantha Souders# cruised to an 8-1 win.
The Marauders took each match from No. 2 singles through the No. 6 spot as well. Knappenberger was impressive with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Sarah Doherty at No. 3. DeStefano needed a tiebreaker in the first set (7-6 (7-5)) against Rachel Steinberg but then breezed 6-0 in the second to earn a win at No. 4 singles.
Souders and Powers, both freshmen, notched the first victories of their carries with wins at No. 5 and No. 6 singles respectively.
While the Marauders improved to 1-0 on the young season, Chestnut Hill dropped to 1-4.
Millersville returns to action on Sunday at La Salle. The dual is scheduled for 12 p.m.
