As a play-making safety from 1984-87, Dion Reed set a new standard for creating turnovers during his ultra-productive career with the Marauders.

Reed, a four-year starter and three-time All-PSAC East selection, set the single-season interceptions record and the mark for career fumble recoveries. He completed his career ranked second in interceptions—one shy of the record. Reed led the team in interceptions in both 1985 and 1987. At the time of his graduation, Reed was only the second Marauder defensive back named All-PSAC East three times and remains one of only three in the program’s rich history to achieve that feat.

Reed’s first record-setting performance came during his sophomore season of 1985 when he broke Will Lewis’s interceptions record by picking off eight passes. He also totaled a career-high 80 tackles and broke up three other passes as well. A preseason All-American as a junior in 1986, Reed suffered a knee injury and late-season hamstring injury but still didn’t miss a game, and he recorded 57 stops, one interception and three passes broken up, helping the Marauders to a 9-1 record and the PSAC’s No. 1-ranked defense.

As a senior and team captain in 1987, Reed tied for the team lead with five interceptions, bringing his career total to 15. He also ranked third on the team with 87 tackles en route to being named All-PSAC East First Team. Showing a true knack for finding the football, Reed totaled seven career fumble recoveries, setting a record that stood for eight seasons.

His 1985 season interceptions total still ranks third-most in a single season, and he, Lewis and Darren Ryals are the only players to pick off five or more passes twice.

Reed remained with the Marauders as a graduate assistant coach in 1988 and later coached football in the youth ranks. He served as the president of the Andre Reed Foundation and has spent a decade on the board. He took over his family business, Reed and Sons Concrete, following his father’s passing in 1996, and now works in business development for OnPoint Facilities Maintenance.
