Marauders open the season with a seventh place finish

BELLE VERNON, Pa. - Cole Duffy opened the 2026-27 season with a top-five individual finish as the Millersville University men's golf team placed seventh at the Vulcan Invitational.
The Marauders finished the two-round tournament at 25-over par, while Duffy led the way individually, tying for fifth at 3-under par. The sophomore carded rounds of 69 and 72, providing Millersville with an early highlight in its season-opening tournament. Duffy's performance was especially notable as he embraced a new team philosophy centered on consistency and avoiding mistakes.
"Cole Duffy played excellent golf with scores of 69 and 72," head coach Matt Shur said. "[He] attributes his success to playing 'decade golf' which is a theme of our team this year. Decade golf is centered around bogey avoidance and just giving yourself birdie chances. He didn't force shots, he stayed patient, waited for his opportunities and then took advantage".
The strong showing comes as Duffy enters his sophomore season as one of the more experienced players on a young Millersville roster. The Danville, Pennsylvania, native is one of two sophomores on the Marauders' 2026-27 roster.
Behind Duffy, senior Logan Wagner finished tied for 19th at 4-over par. Wagner returns to the Marauders after competing in all 13 team events a season ago, recording two top-10 finishes and eight top-25 finishes. His experience gives Millersville another important veteran presence as the team develops its young roster.
The tournament also marked the collegiate debuts of three Millersville freshmen. Lawson Leeper and Carson DiBiaso both finished tied for 35th at 7-over par, while Brady Wager finished tied for 60th at 14-over par.
"The men's team is very young right now and we had 3 freshmen competing in their first college tournament," Shur said. "The freshman fought until the end and will learn a lot from their first college event. There is no give up in this group of players and I'm really excited about that for the rest of the year".
Sophomore Jon Breinich rounded out the Millersville leaderboard, tying Wager for 60th at 14-over par. Breinich joined the Marauders after an impressive freshman season at Lancaster Bible College, where he earned All-Conference honors, posted a 75 scoring average, won two tournaments and recorded nine top-10 finishes.
For Millersville, the opening tournament provided more than an opportunity to establish a position in the standings. It gave a young roster its first chance to put Shur's approach into practice. "Coming into the first tournament there was a lot of excitement. The biggest thing we wanted them to focus on was attitude and controlling what they can control. We talked a lot about having positive body language regardless of how the golf is going. That message will stay the same throughout the year".
Despite finishing seventh, the Marauders leave their first tournament with a young group that Shur believes can continue to improve as the season progresses.
"We keep a great attitude and that is going to take us a long way."
