Marauders surge in final round to secure early-season victory

DANVILLE, Pa. — Demonstrating remarkable composure and team chemistry, the Millersville put together a dominant final-round surge at the Collegiate Officials Challenge to secure an early-season victory.
After a tough opening day, the Marauders leaned into their depth to bounce back on day two. "We didn't play how we wanted to round 1, but that did not discourage us," said head coach Matt Shur. "We lifted each other up and knew that we were going to bounce back day 2. This group is really close, all 7 guys are quickly becoming brothers, and when you're that close as a group, you lean on each other out on the golf course."
Leading the charge on the final day was Cole Duffy, who caught fire with a tournament-best round of 4-under-par. Catching momentum on the back nine, Duffy poured in four birdies with zero bogeys to shoot a 3-under par coming in, finishing the tournament at 1-over-par overall. Lawson Leeper provided steady play across both rounds, following a 76 with an even-par 72 in round two to tie Carson DiBiaso at 4-over-par for the tournament. DiBiaso anchored the lineup with consistent rounds of 1-over and 3-over par respectfully.
"We are a young team, but we are mature on the golf course," Shur noted. "We don't overreact to good or bad shots. We stay level-headed and take things one shot at a time."
That steady approach showed up across the entire roster. Brady Wager set an early tone with a 1-over 73 in the opening round, finishing at 8-over par overall, while Logan Wagner trimmed three strokes off his first round to card a 9-over on day two. Carson Holmes finished at 12-over, and Jon Breinich engineered the biggest turn-around of the event, shaving nine strokes off his opening score to fire a 3-over 75 in round two.
The Marauders now turn their attention to their next challenge as they head to the West Chester tournament next week. "It is nice to get an early win, but we understand there is still work to do," Shur said. "We will continue to get 1% better every day, and we are excited for West Chester."
