Marauders fall in pair of three-set matches

SHEPHERDSTOWN, WV - The Millersville University women's volleyball team dropped both matches at the Shepherd University Tournament, falling to Pitt-Johnstown and Indiana (Pa.) in three sets. The Marauders fell to Pitt-Johnstown by set scores of 25-16, 25-15, and 25-9 before dropping their second match to IUP, 25-11, 25-14, and 25-17.
Match One vs Pitt-Johnstown
The Marauders struggled offensively in match one, finishing with 29.0 points, 23 kills, and three aces. Defensively, Millersville recorded three blocks and 31 digs. Charlee Russick led the Marauders with eight kills, while Hailey Lazur paced the team with two blocks.
Pitt-Johnstown jumped out to an early lead in the opening set, starting with a 5-0 run. Marissa Storti stopped the Cougars' momentum for a moment, but Pitt-Johnstown quickly extended its lead to 8-2. Sam White, Julia Chunta, and Alex Nava worked to spark the Marauder offense, but Millersville struggled to slow down the Cougars' attack. Trailing 24-13, the Marauders fought off three set points, including two points from White, but Pitt-Johnstown ultimately took the opening set, 25-16.
The Marauders finally found some footing in the second set, trading points with the Cougars early on. After the set was tied at 6-6, Millersville briefly took the lead before Pitt-Johnstown responded with an 8-2 scoring run. The Marauders capitalized on several Cougars' errors and once again fought off three set points, with kills from Russick and White. However, the comeback fell short as Pitt-Johnstown took the second set.
The Cougars' offense dominated the third set, opening with a 10-2 scoring run. Addy Van Oosten and Kat Dalessio helped break up the run, but Pitt-Johnstown quickly responded. The Marauders continued to struggle against the Cougars' extended scoring runs, as Pitt-Johnstown closed out the third set to take the match in three sets.
Match Two vs Indiana (Pa.)
IUP kept the Marauder offense cold, limiting Millersville to 17 kills and two aces. Defensively, the Marauders recorded two blocks and 23 digs. White and Sawyer led the offense with nine combined kills, while Lazur once again paced the defense with two blocks.
Lazur and Van Oosten helped the Marauders jump out to an early 2-0 lead to start the first set. The Crimson Hawks responded with a 5-0 run to take a 7-4 lead. Play continued back and forth before a few Marauder errors sparked a 12-0 IUP run. The Crimson Hawks closed out the opening set, 25-11.
The Marauder offense continued to struggle in the second set, quickly falling into a seven-point deficit. White and Van Oosten sparked a 5-0 scoring run to bring Millersville back within four. With the score at 19-14, a few costly Marauder errors allowed the Crimson Hawks to pull away and take the second set.
IUP's offense continued to roll in the third set, opening with six straight kills and aces. Sawyer and the Marauders capitalized on several Crimson Hawk errors but could not turn them into a significant scoring run. With Millersville trailing 22-14, Nava and Alena Lombardo tried to spark the offense, but it was not enough as IUP closed out the set to take the match in three sets.
The Marauders home opener is Tuesday, Sept 15 at 7 p.m. as they welcome the Lions from Lincoln University.
