Marauders sweep Lincoln in volleyball home opener

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - The Millersville University women's volleyball team opened its home schedule in dominant fashion, sweeping the Lincoln University Lions in three straight sets. The Marauders controlled the match from start to finish, earning decisive set victories of 25-14, 25-7, and 25-8.
The Marauders controlled the court throughout the match, holding the Lions to a .000 hitting percentage while hitting .491 as a team. Millersville finished with 55 points, 36 kills, 15 service aces, four blocks, 36 assists, and 17 digs. Addy Van Oosten and Nadia Sawyer led the attack with six kills apiece, while Sam White added five. Marissa Storti and Amanda Protzman powered Millersville's serving game with a combined eight aces. White, Hailey Lazur, and Protzman each recorded a block at the net. Julia Chunta and Addison Reustle orchestrated the Marauders' offense, combining for 32 assists.
The opening set belonged to Millersville from the start. Alex Nava, Sawyer, and Lazur sparked an early 5-0 run to give the Marauders control. Lincoln managed to halt the run, but Millersville quickly regained momentum as White and Nava continued to extend the lead. The Lions struggled to find their rhythm, committing several errors that helped the Marauders build a 17-8 advantage. Millersville reached set point at 24-12, but Lincoln fought off two consecutive set points. The Marauders remained composed, closing out the set to take the opening frame.
Lincoln showed more fight in the second set, as the teams traded points early. With Millersville leading 6-4, Protzman entered the match and immediately made an impact, serving three straight aces as the Marauders extended their advantage. Charlee Russick contributed offensively, while several Lincoln errors helped Millersville build a nine-point lead. Chunta and Alena Lombardo continued to keep the Marauders' offense moving as Millersville maintained control. The Lions eventually found some defensive momentum, but the Marauders responded late in the set. At 19-7, Sidonia Cecco entered as the libero and sparked a six-point run from the service line. Kills from Addy Van Oosten and Protzman helped Millersville close out the set and take a commanding 2-0 lead.
Millersville's offense continued to roll as the Marauders entered the third set looking to close out the sweep. With Millersville leading 5-3, Charlee Russick sparked a 5-0 run to give the Marauders an early advantage. A Millersville error briefly halted the momentum, but the Marauders quickly responded with an 8-1 scoring run to pull further ahead. Lincoln attempted to regain control late in the set, but Millersville remained in command. The Marauders closed out the match in decisive fashion, finishing on a 7-2 run to complete the three-set sweep.
The team passed extremely well today, said head coach Brian Smith. This young team has to pass well. We struggled this past weekend with passing, and if we can pass we can run our offense. If that happens, we can be a threat at the net. This match was a great confidence builder and hopefully we can continue to focus on passing. If they build the confidence, then the team gets better, and everything else will build on itself.
The Marauders are back in action at home on Friday, Sept 18 when they host the Rams from Shepherd University.
