Marauders blank Shepherd in finale to take series

The Marauders committed four errors, giving them 11 in the first three games of the series, and allowed four unearned runs in Saturday's opener, squandering home runs from Jimmy Kirk and Brady Ebbert. But the home team responded with a polished performance in the second game. Rece Ritchey shined with five shutout innings, Xavier Smith hit a home run and Hunsicker went 2 for 4 with three RBIs while the defense played perfectly.
The pivotal moment of the game came in the top of the third with Millersville holding a 1-0 lead. Ethan Burgreen doubled and Andrew O'Brien beat out a well-placed bunt. Bodie Pullen walked to load the bases, but Ritchey quickly put the brakes on Shepherd's momentum. On the ninth pitch of a 3-2 count, No. 2 hitter Ryan Fluhart hit a sharp grounder to third. Hunsicker snared it and fired home in time for the force out. Ritchey then mowed down back-to-back hitters with strikeouts, stranding the bases loaded and preserving the Marauders' lead.
"(Ritchey) has done that this year as opposed to previous years where he'd get in a bad situation throw poor pitches. He's made some big pitches, and that's been the difference in his season so far. It's maturity. He's in his last year, and he knows it. He attacks without fear."
Millersville, however, executed with the bases loaded in the bottom of the inning. Kirk's sacrifice fly made the lead 2-0. After Ebbert reloaded the bases with a walk, Smith was plunked on the elbow. Hunsicker then chopped a 1-2 pitch through the hole between third and short, scoring both Ebbert and Matthew Williams.
"That was the inning that switched the momentum," said Shehan. "Ritchey got out of it, and we went back in, scored four and took the momentum."
Ritchey stranded two more bases runners in the fourth, and in the fifth, he was aided by a brilliant double-play turn from Ebbert and freshman Mason Sanno, who was making the first start of his career. Sanno had a pinch hit single in game one and made every play defensively in game two at second base.
"Donis (Rodriguez) had a tough weekend and needed a day off. He is beat up and needed a rest," said Shehan. "Mason got a base hit, turned a double play. Troy (Chamberlin) did a great job in the lead off spot. It was good to change things around."
Ritchey improved to 2-0 and pitched at least five innings without an earned run allowed for the fourth time in his last five starts. He struck out seven while issuing just one walk.
The win pushed Millersville to 20-7 overall and 5-3 in division play. The Marauders also improved to 14-2 at home.
