SHIPPENSBURG, Pa. - Shippensburg hit four home runs and totaled eight extra-base hits while Millersville managed nine total hits in dropping both games of Friday's doubleheader by scores of 8-2 and 4-3.
Shippensburg's Conner Barto nearly pulled off a no-hitter in the opener. Troy Chamberlin finally broke up the bid with a leadoff since in the sixth inning. Despite Barto's efforts, Millersville still put at least one runner on base in five of seven innings but could not score until the seventh when the Raiders already had the game well in hand.
All of the Raiders' game one runs came in the fourth and fifth innings. Thomas Cano-Piszel and Kyle Ausgotharp highlighted the outburst with home runs.
Millersville led the second game 3-1 entering the bottom of the fourth, but again, the Raiders struck with the long ball. Brady Harbach tied the game with a two-run shot in the fourth, and A.J. Wenrich broke the 3-3 tie with a solo shot in the fifth. Millersville went quietly in the finally three innings, producing one single while sitting down in order twice.
Sammy Laux drove in two runs with a triple in game two, and Christo Hunsicker scored twice. Eli Simonton went five innings with five strikeouts, allowing four runs on eight hits and a walk.
Millersville and Shippensburg close out the series Saturday at Cooper Park. Shippensburg is looking for its first series win against Millersville since 2017.
