EAST STROUDSBURG, Pa. - East Stroudsburg stopped Millersville's 12-game winning streak with a pair of late-inning, drama-filled wins Saturday. Evan Hughes and Jake Albert combined to hand Millersville its first shutout loss of the season in the opener (1-0), and the Warriors took game two 4-3, scoring two runs in the bottom of the seventh without a hit.
ESU (13-7, 2-1) has now won six in a row at home over Millersville and won both of Saturday's games with late-inning production while stymieing Millersville's bats. The Marauders totaled just three hits in the opener, and scored just two total runs--both on a Sammy Laux's game two homer--in the first 13 innings of the doubleheader. Millersville struck out 18 times and drew just four walks across 14 innings.
In game one, Hughes and Matt Shamany were locked in a scoreless duel until the bottom of the sixth. Walker Zampella led off the inning with a single, advanced to second on a ground out, and then scored on Cole Serfass' single to right. Millersville went quietly in the top of the seventh as Laux's two-out single could not be followed.
Hughes (5-0) allowed just two hits over six innings while Shamany (3-1) surrendered four hits over 5 1/3. Jake Albert picked up his third save of the season.
In game two, Millersville left the bases loaded without scoring a run in the sixth but received clutch hits in the top of the seventh to take a 4-3 lead. With Donis Rodriguez on second, the Marauders were down to their final strike with Matthew Williams at the plate. Williams hit a roller inside the third base bag, scoring Rodriguez. The double put Williams in scoring position, and Jimmy Kirk found the hole between the first and second basemen. Williams' head-first slide at the plate just barely beat the throw in from right field.
But Millersville's lead did not last. Gavin Lill walked Troy Davis after reaching a full count, hit Ryan Manning and then walked Parker Fry on five pitches to load the bases. After a first-pitch strike to Christian Maccarone, Lill threw four consecutive balls to walk-in the tying run. Aidan Butz then worked a full count before watching ball four and taking first base with a walk-off base on balls.
Millersville starter Rece Ritchey blanked ESU for four innings but exited with three runs allowed through 4 2/3. ESU starter Ethan Woods struck out eight and scattered five hits over five innings.
