MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - Rece Ritchey and Matt Shamany provided a pair of quality starting pitching performances, and Matthew Williams and Jimmy Kirk hit home runs in game two, leading Millersville to a sweep of Goldey-Beacom by scores of 2-1 and 16-7.
Williams went 4 for 5 with two doubles, a homer, three runs and three RBIs after driving in the go-ahead and game-deciding run in the opening game. Brady Ebbert, who hit a home run Saturday night, totaled five hits and five runs on Sunday. Kirk hit a grand slam in the second inning of game two as Millersville pulled away early.
Millersville needed to rally to even the series in Sunday's opening game. A passed ball in the third inning gave Goldey-Beacom a 1-0 lead. Ritchey, however, kept the deficit at just one, giving up just four hits and a walk while striking out four in five innings--the longest outing of his career.
Millersville took the lead after Troy Chamberlin and Christina Cerone started the inning with singles. Donis Rodriguez sacrificed both runners into scoring position. Ebbert lined a single to center, and Williams followed with a double into the gap.
Joe Morrissey took the ball in the sixth and slammed the door with two shutout innings for his second save of the season.
Shamany followed Ritchey's outing by allowing just two hits and a run with five strikeouts in five innings. Shamany recorded a career-high in innings pitched. He held Goldey-Beacom without a hit until the fifth. Goldey-Beacom's starter, Cody Blence, was chased before the end of the first inning after walking four and hitting two batters. Goldey-Beacom used eight pitchers in the game, walked eight batters and hit six.
Millersville scored its 16 runs on 12 hits, and Millersville went to its bench sending 14 different hitters to the plate. For the final two innings, Millersville did not have a single upper classmen playing in the field, and five of the players were freshmen. Three freshmen also pitched in the game.
POSTGAME REACTION FROM COACH JON SHEHAN
On the performances of Ritchey and Shamany: It's gotten better and better. Week three now, the starters are falling into a rhythm. Last week, Ritchey was really good but didn't finish hitters. This week, he finished hitters. Shamany has been lights out in all three outings."
On the offensive performance in game two: "I have to wonder if two weeks off messes with timing. It took us a little while to get on track. It's tough for pitches to pitch with our guys on base because we are going to run and create havoc.
On the young players playing in game two: "We've been blessed to be able to get those guys in the game. We are learning a lot about these guys because we have had some lopsided games on both sides of it. This time of year, with 19 new guys and four new coaches on staff, we are learning a lot about our team. It's important to go through these things this time of year.
