'Ville roll to a 4-0 win over Mavericks

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. — Millersville field hockey (3-0) defeated the Mercy University Mavericks (1-2) Thursday night at Biemsderfer Stadium. The Marauders' sticks stayed hot as they put up four goals partnered with a team shutout, their first of the young season. The Marauders had four different goal scorers in the contest.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Paige Webster opened the scoring for the Black and Gold just about two minutes into the game with an assist from fellow captain Myah Yesko. Webster cut through the midfield and into the semicircle, where Yesko hit her in stride to tally the assist as Webster's momentum took her within a few feet of the goal, where she put it in the back of the net. Millersville stayed on the attack with three more shots on goal that came in the remainder of the first quarter.

The Marauders struck again just 30 seconds into the second quarter when the hot stick of Alexis Kern continued to stay that way and deflected a shot by Erin Esterhuizen into the back of the net to extend the lead to two. The shots continued to fly for the rest of the second quarter, but Mercy's goalie kept the Marauders at large with a six-save second quarter.

The Mavericks found their only offense of the game with five minutes remaining in the third quarter when they had a corner opportunity that was defended perfectly by the Marauders. The Marauders' defense continued to shine throughout the game and held the Mavericks' offense to just one shot on goal. The lead extended to three when freshman forward Teagan Byler recorded her first collegiate goal for the Marauders.

Erin Esterhuizen continued to generate great offense for the Marauders. Just a minute into the fourth quarter, she put a shot on goal that was saved, and then Emma Ruley put it home to ice the Mavericks and make the score 4-0 in favor of the Marauders. Minutes later, the Mavericks took their first shot on goal that was saved by Adeline Arkhurst.

INTERVIEW WITH SHELLY BEHRENS POST-GAME:
  • You guys had 17 corner opportunities and no goals generate from those corners. What is the key to executing on those set pieces?
    • "I think a little bit of hockey IQ of the situation. We're giving different people the ball, and we're seeing the situation, but no practice is like a game so that game experience is critical. I'm not exactly thrilled with that, but we're earning the corner opportunities and that is what matters for us."
  • The defense stepped up in a big way when they were tested, can you speak to the defensive execution on that side of the ball tonight?
    • "Well I asked them to! I asked them to do a couple of things differently and to their credit they went out and did them. Our midfield defense improved a little bit which helped our backfield. So a huge shout out to Peyton Bean, Jillian Kringe, and Daniella Fazekas on the back line today."
Millersville's next game is Sunday, September 14 at 12 p.m. against Assumption University Greyhounds at home.
