Historic day for the Marauders surges them past D'Youville

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. — Millersville field hockey (6–4, 2–1 PSAC) delivered a historic offensive performance Sunday afternoon at Chryst Field, defeating D'Youville (0–10, 0–0 ECC) by a score of 13–0. The Marauders' 13 goals tied the program's single-game scoring record, first set in 1994 against Pennsylvania Textile, and showcased contributions from ten different goal scorers.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Millersville wasted no time setting the tone, scoring six times in the opening quarter. Erin Esterhuizen opened the scoring just three minutes into play, forcing a turnover in the offensive zone and slicing through the Saints' defense to make it 1–0. Esterhuizen added her second goal just over two minutes later off a corner inserted by Daina Thomson and passed across the circle by Paige Webster.

The Marauders continued their corner success at the 5:06 mark, when Esterhuizen's shot from the top of the arc was deflected by Zoe Angelinas for her first career goal. Less than two minutes later, Millersville struck again as Madison Shea converted on a corner inserted by Lauren Kampi, assisted by Jillian Kringe—also marking Shea's first career goal.

Following a penalty stroke drawn by Alaina Culbert, Megan Alvarez buried a shot into the top-right corner to extend the lead to five. Shea capped the first-quarter scoring with a backhanded goal in the final 11 seconds, sending Millersville into the break ahead 6–0.

The Marauders continued their dominance in the second quarter, turning away multiple D'Youville corners thanks to strong defensive work and key saves by Addy Arkhurst. Millersville then converted offensively as Collette Lennon deflected a shot from Lauren Kampi off a corner to make it 7–0. Less than a minute later, Thomson added her second goal of the day off a feed from Angelinas to push the advantage to eight heading into halftime.

Millersville kept the pressure on in the third, scoring four more times. Emma Ruley deflected in a shot from Paige Webster before Alexis Kern pushed home a loose ball in front of the cage. Makayla Brunnabend scored off a corner from Faith Bollinger, and Thomson netted her second of the afternoon on a setup from Teagan Byler, slicing through the D'Youville defense to make it 12–0.

In the final minute of regulation, Culbert capped the scoring with her second goal of the season, sealing the 13–0 shutout victory for the Marauders and tying the single-game record that had stood for over three decades.

POST GAME WITH SHELLY BEHRENS

  • Statement win from your team today, how did you keep your team focused on the task at hand knowing this game was in preparation for conference play that continues this week?
    • "I think that it was really important to come out here and have a good structure and good connectivity between our team. And I thought that we did. I was really surprised by how well we attacked after playing yesterday morning in the early game. So I am proud of us for that. I think just setting small markers and small achievements for the ladies as well but lots of respect for D'Youville."
  • A program record tying 13 goals today and from all over the field, how can you speak on your teams execution today?
    • "I think just selflessness, it's like every day someone gets to step up and that is always positive. I think we just got to keep doing what we're doing right. It was nice to see Erin really step up today and it was nice to see a couple people get their first goals at the collegiate level. I thought McKayla and Maddie played great on the back end as well so I was happy for them. It gave us a chance to see some kids that really put in the time every day and just see that selflessness and work effort off the ball to be in a good position."
