BELLE VERNON, Pa. - You can forget about a sophomore slump for
Timothy Peters. The reigning PSAC Athlete
and Freshman of the Year picked up right where he left off, winning the season-opening Vulcan Invitational by two shots. Peters' play led Millersville into a tie for first, but CalU edged the Marauders in a four-player playoff.
Since stepping on campus in the fall of 2023 Peters has five wins, and he bested 54 golfers over 54 holes for this one. As usual, Peters was rock-steady for three rounds, opening with back-to-back even-par 72s before a 1-over 73 on Tuesday. Along with Peters, Goldey-Beacom's Adrian Bonilla, and Millersville's
Bo Meakim, who tied for second, were the only golfers in the field to post two rounds of par or better. Meakim finished at 3-over, rebounding from a 75 in the first round with back-to-back rounds of 72. Meakim now has four top-10 finishes in 13 tournaments.
Eric Miller shot a 9-over to finish in a tie for eighth, giving him his fifth top-10 in nine career events.
Millersville and CalU both finished at 21-over for the tournament, but the host Vulcans charged from behind in the final round, shooting a 3-under team score. Three Vulcans shot under par, and Gavin Goodrich's 3-under was the low round of the tournament. Millersville entered the final 18 holes with an 11-shot advantage and shot an 8-over--still the fifth-best team score of the entire tournament. The team title was determined with a four-player playoff on the ninth hole. All four Marauders posted pars while CalU finished with an aggregate 1-under score.
Max Pflieger tied for 12th at 11-over. Newcomers
Sebastian Botero and
Josh Baker placed 21st and 26th respectively.
