MILLERSVILLE, Pa. — The Marauders bounced back Sunday afternoon with a 3–2 win over New Haven. Millersville improved to 3–1 on the season behind goals from
Paige Webster,
Saige Shine, and
Emily Buss.
After falling in a double overtime loss in their last appearance, the Marauders righted the ship back home. Getting on the board first, Millersville had a penalty corner with four minutes to go in the opening frame.
Caitlin Wassermann received the penalty corner insert and fired a shot intentionally wide of the frame, and Webster got a stick on it to redirect it for her first goal of the season. However, the Chargers answered right before the period ended as Erin Smith tied things up with just 10 seconds remaining. The Marauders had a response early in the second with a goal nearly identical to their first. It was Wassermann again getting the ball towards the net, though this time Shine was the target and goal scorer, restoring Millersville's lead just under four minutes into the second quarter.
The Marauders were knocking on the door for the middle part of the game, even getting a chance with a penalty stroke, but it wasn't until late in the third quarter they would be able to add onto their lead. Buss found herself alone with the goalie in tight quarters and was able to get the ball around the Chargers last line of defense to add the insurance goal for Millersville just before the fourth quarter. The game got a little close at the end, as New Haven scored off a penalty corner with plenty of traffic in front. Eliza Caven sent the ball towards the net, and Emma Beaujouan had her stick in the right place to get a piece of it and cut the deficit in half. Despite the late goal against, the Marauders held on to secure the win and improve to 3–1.
Millersville has a quick turnaround with a day off before its next game, as the Marauders will hit the road to play it's PSAC rival West Chester in a non-conference game. The Marauders and Golden Rams square off at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 17 in West Chester, Pa.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The Marauders again controlled the majority of the offensive chances, having the edge in shots 16–4 with a 12–3 lead in shots on goal as well. Penalty corners were fairly even though, as the Chargers had seven to the Marauders 8.
- Buss led all players in shots with three, adding her team-leading third goal of the season. Buss has now scored a goal in each win this season and has been a nice breakout for the Marauders offense after scoring one goal in each of her first two seasons.
- Wassermann's two helpers gives her a new season-high in assists with four already on the year. The graduate student's previous high was three set in 2022.
GAME NOTES
- This was the first time Millersville and New Haven have played each other, with the Chargers becoming the 81st opponent Millersville has played. The Marauders have a win percentage of .500 or better against 57 of those teams.
POSTGAME REACTION FROM HEAD COACH SHELLY BEHRENS
Opening thoughts on the win: "It's a nice rebound for us from being on the road. Coming out today, playing a lot of people and learning, it's a good experience for us. It was nice to put the ball in the net, and we'll try to clean up on some opportunities we also had, but I'm happy for us. Overall, I thought we did well, we just need to be sharper in some areas and we will be."
On the team's performance after a loss: "It's a big difference from last year, but we're a different team now. I think sometimes you have to have that adversity to know what it's like and to stay together. I do think we stayed better today."
On the upcoming game against West Chester: "Although it's a non-conference game, it's going to be a great PSAC matchup. We're looking forward to making improvements, and it's always a great game anytime we play West Chester, so we're looking forward to it."
