Peters narrowly misses nationals berth, Marauders place 15th

WHEELING, W.Va. - One shot over 54 holes was the difference for Millersville freshman Timothy Peters. His stellar rookie season, which included a PSAC Championship and four wins, concluded Saturday at the NCAA Atlantic/East Super Regional with him narrowly missing a berth to the NCAA Championships. As a team, the Marauders could not replicate their outstanding second round and faded into 15th.

The final round began with a shotgun start, but two lengthy weather delays pushed play into twilight. With the Marauders slipping out of team contention, Peters vied to be one of two golfers to qualify for nationals as an individual. Peters was a steady performer for three days, shooting rounds of 73 and 72 before closing with another 73 on Saturday. His final round, which started on the eighth hole, included five brides, but a double-bogey on the par-3 seventh--his final hole--proved costly. His 54-hole score of 5-over put him in sixth place.

Among the golfers ahead of Peters on the leaderboard were Davis & Elkins' Martin Eisa and Adelphi's Filip Wetterqvist, whose teams landed outside the top five. Eisa, who entered the day at 1-under-par, closed with a 1-over 72 to finish second overall. Wetterqvist finished one shot ahead of Peters after closing with a 3-over 74. While Wetterqvist bogeyed his first and final holes, his round included 13 pars and a lone birdie on the par-5 14th.

Peters and his teammates entered the day in 12th place but within striking range of fifth. The Marauders, however, posted a 311 total. Peters was the only Marauder to shoot under 79. Bobby Lugiano and Ty Morral both capped their Millersville careers with a 79 while senior Carl Ernst shot an 80. Freshman Jake Speers finished with an 83. Morral closed the tournament in a tie for 45th. Ernst placed in a tie for 49th. Lugiano tied for 63rd and Speers tied for 76th.

Gannon ran away with the super regional crown, besting runner-up Charleston by 23 shots. St. Thomas Aquinas, IUP and Post also qualified for the NCAA Championships.

Millersville's 2023-24 season was record-setting as its five team victories were the most in program history. The PSAC Championship in October was its first since 2013.
