WHEELING, W.Va. - The Millersville men's golf got a sneak peek at the course and competition for the upcoming NCAA Atlantic/East Super Regional and finished ninth in a loaded field of 26 teams from the six Division II conferences.
The Super Region Preview, hosted by West Liberty, was a 36-hole event providing teams like the already-NCAA super regional qualified Marauders a test run at Oglebay Resort's Robert Trent Jones Course. It's the last opportunity for other teams to bolster the resume for an at-large bid. The par-71 course presented a stiff challenge, particularly on day two when only one team in the field bested its round-one score. Across two days, only three team rounds broke 300, and no team went lower than 301 in the second round.
Millersville closed round one in ninth place with a 305 and stayed in that spot with a 319 on Tuesday. Gannon held a six-shot lead over Charleston and Livingstone after round one and slipped into a tie with Charleston after posting a 309 to Charleston's 303 on Tuesday.
Freshman
Timothy Peters was the lone Marauder to crack the top 25 in the 130-golfer field. He shot the team's best score in both rounds, and his first-round 74 was the team's low tournament score. Glenville State's Benjamin Fernandez cruised to an eight-shot win after a 4-under 67 in round one and a 1-under on Tuesday.
Ty Morral slipped from 21st to 26th after following his first-round 75 with a 79.
Bobby Lugiano made a 42-spot jump up the leaderboard in round two, responding from an 84 with a 77. That landed him in 66th. The scoring went the other way for Carl Ernest and
Jake Speers in round two, who dropped to 82nd and 92nd respectively.
