Marauders open PSAC East action with sweep of Bloomsburg

MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - Carson Kulina pitched six strong innings and Matthew Williams hit a grand slam to give Millersville a 10-1 in the opener, and the Marauders held off Bloomsburg 3-2 to complete Friday's PSAC East doubleheader sweep.

Millersville (12-3, 2-0 PSAC East) received four hits from Williams on the day, and the long ball played a key factor. Williams' third-inning grand slam in the third pushed Millersville's advantage to double-digits, and in the first inning of game two, Mark McNelly smacked a two-run shot for an early lead.

GAME ONE
Kulina (3-0) surrendered just three hits and did not walk a batter while striking out six in six innings--matching his longest outing of the season. Kulina has now pitched at least five innings and not allowed more than two runs in any of his last four starts. Kulina kept the Huskies off the board until the sixth, and Zack Tukis struck out the side in the seventh.

Millersville scored all 10 of its runs in the first three innings. Sam Morris doubled in the game's first two runs in the first, and the Marauders created havoc on the base paths, moving runners on steals and bunts, putting pressure on the Bloomsburg infield. Justin Taylor bunted home Morris for a 3-0 lead, and the Huskies committed two errors in the first, one of which allowed a fourth run to score.

Amani Jones went 2 for 3 with three runs and a steal. McNelly and Morris also stole bases.

GAME TWO
McNelly's homer staked the Marauders to an early lead, but the Huskies chased starter Colby Gromlich with a run in each of the first two innings. Millersville reliever Alex Kuehn (1-0) slowed the Huskies with a career-high three innings in which he struck out three, did not walk a batter and allowed just two hits.

Millersville manufactured the go-ahead run in the fourth on a Jeff Sabater bunt. Nick O'Connor doubled with one out and moved to third on a John Seibert flyout. With two outs, Sabater popped up a bunt down the third base line. The hard-charging Jonathan Labarbera made contact with the ball in fair territory before it squirted foul, and O'Connor, moving on contact, scored easily.

Bloomsburg put the tying run on base in the sixth, but Evan Rishell quickly picked off the runner, and then retired the next two. In the seventh, Bloomsburg threatened after drawing two walks and two wild pitches put runners on the corners with one out. Millersville called Cole Fisher from the bullpen to face the Huskies' two leading hitters. Fisher caught Wyatt Metzger looking, and then popped up Justin Wilson for the final out. It was Fisher's first career save.
