Kovack's pinch-hit, walk-off single gives Marauders win in extras

GLENVILLE, W.Va. - After surrendering a five-run lead, No. 6 Millersville entered the bottom of the 10th trailing Atlantic Region rival Charleston, 8-5. But Taso Kovack delivered a two-out, two-run, pinch-hit single to lift the Marauders to a wild, 9-8 win in extra innings.

Millersville (7-2) led 5-0 entering the eighth inning, but Charleston rallied, scoring two in the eighth, and tying the game with three runs in the ninth without hitting a ball out of the infield. Charleston then built an 8-5 lead in the 10th when backup catcher Finn Ellis hit a two-run homer, and Collin Rust singled in a run.

While Charleston scored eight runs over the final three innings, Millersville and gone down in order with five strikeouts against reliever Dwayne Sumler in the eighth and ninth. But Sumler lost his command in the 10th. A leadoff walk to John Seibert was followed by a single from Amani Jones. Hunter Stevens drew a walk when Sumler committed a pitch clock violation in a three-ball count. With the bases loaded, Sam Morris and Nick O'Connor drew back-to-back walks, pulling Millersville to within a run. Kovack, pinch-hitting for pitcher Kory Williams (1-0) after a defensive switch in the 10th, lined a single up the middle, scoring Stevens from third and Morris from second. It was only the fifth at-bat of the season, and it was his first hit.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Millersville's four-run bottom of the 10th was a dramatic swing of momentum after Charleston had charged from behind against Millersville's bullpen. Millersville used six pitchers over the final three innings. The blown save left Alex Mykut with a no decision despite a brilliant six shutout innings in which he allowed just two hits and struck out nine. Charleston sent seven pitchers to the mound, with Sumler's 2 2/3 innings the longest outing for the team.
  • Millersville totaled 13 hits and drew seven walks but also struck out 14 times. Jeff Sabater went 4 for 5 and stole two bases. Matthew Williams went 3 for 6 with two doubles and two runs. O'Connor plated two off the bench, putting down a squeeze bunt in the seventh in addition to his bases-loaded walk in the 10th.
  • Millersville's pitchers struck out 16 Golden Eagles, giving the staff 35 strikeouts in the last two games and double-digit strikeouts in six of the last seven.
