ABOUT THE GAMES

  • The Millersville softball team hosts Bloomfield at Seaber Softball Stadium for a doubleheader on February 21. The Marauders are coming off of an award-winning first weekend in which they swept their season-opening twin bill over Goldey-Beacom.
  • The Maruders were originally scheduled to play Bloomfield on Feb. 16, but that was moved to Wedenesday due to the snow. That will the Marauders' last home date for over a month, as the next scheduled home contest is on Mar. 26 against East Stroudsburg.

SCOUTING THE MARAUDERS

  • Millersville dominated in its initial competition of 2024, shutting out the Lightning 2-0 in the first game and then doubling them up 8-4 game two.
  • Alex Schaefer authored that first shutout, going the distance while scattering five hits across those seven innings. The senior tallied eight strikeouts while not allowing a walk or hit batter as well. She looks to continue her role as the ace of this Marauders team after a 2023 season in which she recorded a 2.96 earned run average and 183 strikeouts in 177.1 innings pitched. The strikeout and innings pitched totals both ranked third in the PSAC.
  • Morgan Crutcher got the start for the Marauders in game two and hurled four innings while allowing just one earned run. Angelina Saverase closed it out and got the victory, hurling two and one-third scoreless while allowing only one batter to reach base.
  • At the plate, Millersville had a number of standout performances; three hitters recorded hits in at least half of their at-bats. Gabby D'Ottavio hit .571 in her seven at-bats while driving in three runs. She was responsible for half of the Marauders' eight runs in the second game and was named a Louisville Slugger/NFCA Top Performer for games played between Feb. 5 and Feb. 11 for her efforts.
  • Kendra Bumgardner went deep in game one to extend the team's lead to 2-0. That was one of three hits she would tally on the weekend en route to a 1.571 on-base plus slugging. Taylor Campagna started game one and had a single in three tries. The senior showed poise coming off the bench in the doubleheader's latter half, as her fourth-inning pinch hit single drove in two runs and gave the Marauders a 3-1 lead.

SCOUTING THE BEARS

  • Bloomfield will be playing its first games of the season when facing the 'Ville. The Bears are coming off of a 2023 campaign in which they went 16-34 overall and 12-12 in CACC conference play. They will look to get off to a better start this season after beginning 2023 with an 11-game losing streak.
  • The Bears are led by first-year head coach and 2021 Bloomfield alum Delanie Cruz. She spent two seasons with Division I Fairleigh-Dickinson as an assistant coach from 2022-23 before being hired in the fall of 2023.
  • Notable returners for the Bears include junior middle-infielder Audrianna Ortiz and senior outfielder Sierra Albritton. Ortiz hit .302 last season and started all 39 of her games played. That batting mark led the team. Albritton was second on the team in average with a .285 mark and led the team in games played, with 48. She also paced the Bears in steals, reaching safely in 28 of her 30 attempts.
  • Bloomfield was selected to finish tenth of 12 teams in the 2024 CACC Softball Preseason Coaches Poll.
