Marauders bounce back in match two against UNC Pembroke

| By:
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 CHARLESTON, W.Va. - After getting swept in their first match of the day by Charleston, Millersville made some adjustments and salvaged the day with a 3-1 victory over UNC Pembroke. It was truly a tale of two entirely different matches, as the Marauders recorded their worst hitting percentage of the season in match one and their best in the nightcap.

RECAP MATCH ONE:  The Marauders found themselves in an early hole at 9-3 in the first set but battled back to 10-12 with an emphatic Taylor Welter kill following a Brian Smith timeout.  The two teams traded points throughout the middle of the set, but the Golden Eagles' 11-2 run fueled by multiple Marauder errors sank the visitors.

Determined not to go as quietly in the second set, Millersville jumped out to an early 7-4 lead. However, Charleston answered back with a 7-0 run to make it 11-7. 'Ville drew even at 18-all before Charleston dashed the visitor's hopes of an equalizing game by scoring six straight points en route to a 25-21 victory. Set three was neck and neck until the score read 13-11 in favor of the Golden Eagles. Charleston then buried the Marauders with a 9-0 run, making it 22-11. Emma Kerwin stemmed the tide momentarily with back-to-back kills but the hosts finished it off by a score of 25-16.

RECAP MATCH TWO: The Marauders started out on top 8-5 in the first set before a five-point Pembroke run led Smith to call timeout at 10-8.  It was destined to be a battle throughout the middlegame, as neither team could escape to a comfortable lead. After a Caroline Halsey kill down the heart of the hardwood gave the Marauders a late lead at 19-18, the Braves took seven of the game's final 10 points and the win, 25-22.

Heading into the second set, Smith was looking for a spark. He found it when he started freshman Sam White. The 'Ville raced out to an early six-point edge at 10-4 when UNC went on a 5-1 run of their own. Millersville went up by five at 16-11 and kept the edge at four or five throughout the rest of the contest before ballooning to 11 with a six-point run, making it 24-13. The Braves were not finished, however, running off seven straight points before Kerwin ended it with a kill.

Millersville would go on to dominate the next two sets in similar fashion. Set three found the Marauders up five or six points in the middle stages before stretching the lead out to double digits by the end (25-15). The onslaught continued as the next game found Millersville suddenly up 16-3, buoyed by a 14-1 run. Kerwin recorded three kills in four points at one point during that run, finishing the match with a team-high 20. The Braves would make it a single-digit contest later in the set, but that was just window dressing, as the Marauders were able to claim their first victory of the tournament.

COACH BRIAN SMITH'S THOUGHTS
  • On match one: "The first match was tough. Taylor was the only Marauder with solid hitting number and our ball control was very spotty during the match. We didn't get much in the way of production from our middles partly because of the passing but also partly because of trust. We lost to the better team in that first match so the hope is to learn from that."
  • On his team's adjustments between matches: "Learning is important not only for players but coaches. Between matches we had discussions about getting our middles more swings and letting the team make as many mistakes as needed to become more balanced on offense.  The team answered and as is often the case, reminded us that young players and young teams need to be allowed to fail if the lessons learned serve the greater goal."

GAME NOTES
  • With the start of Becca Hartranft in the first match, it marks the ninth different starter that Smith has played this season.
  • Taylor Welter showed improved discipline from last weekend, as she finished a number of points with clean kills and led the Marauders in hitting percentage (.386) as well as total kills (10) in match one.
  • Charleston was ranked #1 in the Mountain East Conference's South Division in their preseason coaches poll.
  • Alex Nava made her first appearance of the season in the second set of match one.
