Millersville

Volleyball vs. Wilmington

Volleyball returns home to face Chestnut Hill

| By:
  • Series: 2–0
  • Series Streak: Millersville, 2
  • First Meeting: W, 3–1 (2014)
  • Last Meeting: W, 3–0 (2019)

ABOUT THE MATCH

  • The Marauders host the Chestnut Hill Griffins on Wednesday. This will be Millersville's first home game since Sept. 2, when they finished the Marauder Clash with a doubleheader sweep over Mercyhurst and Roberts Wesleyan. They come in at 4-7 on the season while the Griffins sit at 3-7. Chestnut Hill is on the latter half of a back-to-back, having played Shippensburg on Tuesday.

SCOUTING THE MARAUDERS

  • Millersville comes into this bout looking to snap a four-game losing skid dating back to Sept. 9 against Gannon. They've dropped matches to Dominican, Roberts Wesleyan and West Chester in that span.
  • That streak is partly due to the loss of starting outside hitter Taylor Welter. After suffering an ankle injury in the third set against Gannon, she hasn't been able to suit up in any of the games since. They will most likely be without her for this match as well.
  • In Welter's absence, three freshmen have stepped up. Emma Kerwin, Sam White and Kalia Espenlaub have been shouldering the attack for the Marauders, especially in their last matchup against West Chester. Kerwin led the team in kills with 13 while White and Espenlaub set season-highs with 12 apiece. White and Espenlaub also recorded hitting percentages north of .400 in doing so.
  • After starting the season slow, the Marauder front line has come into form over the past three matches. They've totaled 20 blocks over that span compared to a combined 24 in the previous eight. Madison Williams is a player to pay attention to in that category.
  • The leader of this team is their setter, Emma Ludwig. She leads the team in assists with 398.
  • One position to pay attention to is the libero. Madison Von Neida reclaimed that spot over Elizabeth Villegas during the team's doubleheader on Sept. 17 and played that role ever since. Villegas previously held that position, having overtaken Von Neida in set two of the season's first match.

SCOUTING THE GRIFFINS

  • Chestnut Hill enters this game on the second half of a back-to-back, having hosted Shippensburg Tuesday night. That loss puts them on a three-game skid.
  • Freshman outside hitter Rachel Mace leads Chestnut Hill on both ends of the floor. She leads them in kills (107) and digs (135) while chipping in seven total blocks on the season. Mace was teammates with Marauder freshman Caitlyn Verespy at Villa Joseph Marie High School.
  • This Griffins roster features another two-way player in addition to Mace. Erika Dubosky is second on the team in kills (94) and digs (129) and paced the team in both of those categories in their loss against Shippensburg with 15 kills and 20 digs.
  • Setter Mia Caporellie recorded her 2000th assist last week against Goldey-Beacom, becoming just the second player in school history to do so. She is tops on the Griffins in assists with 291.
  • The Griffins and the Marauders have faced two common opponents this season in Wilmington and Rollins. Both teams lost to Rollins, while the Griffins defeated Wilmington 3-2, three weeks after the Marauders lost 3-1 in their season opener.

THE LAST TIME OUT

  • Millersville: West Chester 3, Millersville 2 (Sept. 20, 2023) - Millersville opened their 2023 PSAC slate with a close loss to West Chester. Two freshmen, Sam White and Kalia Espenlaub led the Marauder attack with 12 kills each. They held set leads of 1-0 and 2-1 in the match but were unable to close the door on the Golden Rams.
  • Chestnut Hill: Shippensburg 3, Chestnut Hill 1 (Sept. 26, 2023) -The Griffins dropped the first half of their mid-week PSAC back-to-back to Shippensburg in four sets. Three Griffins recorded double-doubles in the effort, but it wasn't enough to overcome Raider advantages in both kills and hitting percentage. After losing the first set, they battled back to even it at one apiece, but Shippensburg closed the Griffins out by taking the next two.

SERIES HISTORY

  • This will be just the third time that the Griffins and Marauders have faced off. Millersville holds the edge in the series at 2-0.
  • Just like the previous two matchups, the game will be in Millersville. This is the first time in the series' history that they will meet outside of the Marauder Clash, however. In 2014, the hosts won 3-1 and in 2019 they blanked the visitors 3-0.
