WEST CHESTER, Pa. - West Chester edged Millersville 5-2 in a pivotal PSAC East women's tennis match-up Friday afternoon.
Two crucial singles points went to West Chester with wins in the third set. Both teams entered the dual with 4-0 division records, and West Chester's win puts the Golden Rams at 7-5 overall and a match up in the standings over the Marauders, who are now 5-8 (4-1).
HOW IT HAPPENED
• West Chester earned the doubles point with wins in the No. 1 and No. 3 flights. Maria Ojeda and Chloe Abramowitz won their fifth-straight match as a team with a 6-1 victory over Elaina Lee and Gabriella Lerario dos Santos.
• While Millersville received wins from Hui Jen Soo (No. 3) and Abramowitz (No. 4), the Golden Rams won a pair of three-set matches in the No. 1 and No. 2 flights that made the difference. Lee outlasted Noelle Htwar, 7-5, 6-2, 6-1, and Davica Massaro topped Ojeda 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 in a nail biter.
• Abramowitz has now won six-straight singles matches and is the first Marauder to 10 wins this season.
REACTION FROM COACH MATT HELSEL
• "I was really impressed with how we played today. West Chester played well, as they have been all year, but we were right there. Chloe and Maria were rock solid in doubles. Chloe and Jen beat two very good players in straight sets so that was amazing. Noelle and Maria pushed their opponents to three sets and battled so well but fell a little short. Congrats to West Chester for holding us off because we didn't make it easy for them, that's for sure."
UP NEXT
• Millersville looks to bounce back on April 12 at Kutztown.
