
Men's tennis pushes No. 5 Barry, rolls past Cedarville to start Spring Break trip

ORLANDO, Fla. - The Millersville men's tennis team started its annual Spring Break trip to Orlando, Fla., in impressive fashion, taking two points from the defending Division II champions on Sunday before getting into the win column with a one-sided 6-1 win over Cedarville Monday afternoon.
The Marauders are now 3-1 on the young season, with that loss coming to No. 5-ranked Barry on Sunday.
BARRY 5, MILLERSVILLE 2
• The back-to-back PSAC Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week Carlos Martinez-Lucas netted the Marauders a point at No. 1 singles. He took the first set 6-1 before his opponent retired with an injury. Newcomer Lino Morin also one his match at No. 6 singles, topping Martin Heller, 6-4, 6-3.
• While Barry won two of three doubles matches, Millersville's ace team of Martinez-Lucas and Frank Yanni continued its impressive 2021-22 season, winning a tiebreaker 7-6 (7-4) over Hugo Cazaban and Vlad Popescu.
• The win improved Barry to 8-2.
MILLERSVILLE 6, CEDARVILLE 1
• Millersville swept doubles to score the match's first. Yanni and Martinez-Lucas rolled to a 6-1 win. Dylan Tull and Morin paired for a 6-4 win in the No. 2 spot, and Santiago Ramos and Zach Pernia won 6-4 in the No. 3 spot.
• Yanni did not compete in singles action, so Millersville shuffled its lineup and inserted Jasper de Koenig into the No. 6 spot. de Koenig responded with a 6-4, 6-4 win. Ramos, who moved up a spot to No. 2, rallied after a first set loss to win 3-6, 7-5, 10-7. Tull won handily at No. 3, 6-4, 6-0, and Morin won a first set tiebreaker before blanking his opponent in the second set, 7-6 (7-5), 6-0. Martinez-Lucas won again in the No. 1 spot, sweeping Toshi Wantanabe, 6-0, 6-4.
NOTES
• Martinez-Lucas has won all three singles matches in the new year. and he and Yanni have won seven-straight doubles matches.
• de Koenig, who is now 4-1, played saw the court for the first time since Sept. 18, and played his first career dual match.
UP NEXT
• Three more matches remain on Millersville's Orlando trip. The Marauders are off on Tuesday and play Southern New Hampshire on Wednesday.
