KUTZTOWN, Pa. - Ben Wilchacky,
Christian Wingard and
Kris Pirozzi combined to hold Kutztown scoreless for the final eight innings of Friday's PSAC East opener, leading the Millersville Marauders to a 3-2 road win.
Friday marked the beginning of a new schedule format for PSAC league play that features a nine-inning game on Fridays followed by a seven-nine doubleheader. Wilchacky (5-0) won for the fifth time in five starts, and the Marauders rallied from a 2-0 deficit, using
Keegan Soltis' RBI groundout in the sixth to take the lead for good.
The Marauders were limited to three hits, but Wingard and Pirozzi combined for 3 2/3 hitless, scoreless innings in which they allowed just two runners to reach base.
Millersville (11-5) has now won six of its last seven.
GAME HIGHLIGHTS
• Wilchacky entered the game riding a streak of 15 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings, but Kutztown scored twice in the top of the first. A leadoff single and back-to-back hit batsmen loaded the bases. One run scored on a wild pitch, and a second came home on a balk. But Wilchacky quickly settled. He got two fly outs to escape the inning and went on to finish with 5 1/3 innings.
• Millersville's bats promptly answered as well. Soltis led off the top of the second with a walk. Two sacrifice bunts and two Kutztown errors later and the game was tied.
Chase Simmons scored on
Tyler Wrights squeeze with two outs.
• Millersville manufactured the go-ahead run in the sixth.
Bren Taylor led off with a single and moved to third on
Thomas Caufield's single. With one out, Soltis hit a roller to the third baseman, and Taylor raced home for the Millersville lead.
• Wingard ended Kutztown's sixth by rolling a 4-6-3 double play and set down the Golden Bears in order in the seventh. Pirozzi entered in the eighth with a runner on first and quickly fanned two and sat down three in a row. In the ninth, Pirozzi hit the second batter of the inning, but he rallied with a strikeout and fly out to end it.
