Schaeffer's game one gem helps Millersville to a split at Lock Haven

Faith Willenbrock set the program's RBI record

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. - Millersville University senior Faith Willenbrock entered Tuesday's doubleheader at Lock Haven needing just one RBI to set the program's career record. She drove in two runs in her first at bat and accounted for all three of Millersville's runs in the game one win that also featured a complete game from freshman pitcher Alex Schaeffer. Lock Haven, however earned a split with Madison Waltman keeping Millersville in check in game two for a 4-3 win.

Willenbrock moved past Brittany Smith into first place on the career RBI list and now has 118 in her 118 career games. She is also Millersville's career leader in home runs with 40.

The split moved Millersville's record to 11-9 (7-9 PSAC East). Three of Lock Haven's four wins on the season have come against the Marauders.

GAME ONE (MILLERSVILLE 3, LOCK HAVEN 1)
• Schaeffer (3-2) tossed her second career complete game, allowing just one run on seven hits. She didn't walk a batter and struck out seven. She was perfect through the first three innings, and the only run she allowed was a solo homer in the fourth. With Millersville leading 2-0 in the fifth, Lock Haven led off with two-straight singles. Then, with one out and runners on second and third, Schaeffer got a strikeout and a pop up to escape. Lock Haven put runners on second and third again in the sixth, but Schaeffer stranded both with a strikeout to end the inning. Lock Haven also put two on base in the seventh after two Millersville errors, but Schaeffer was unfazed and retired two in a row to end the game.
• Willenbrock did the heavy lifting for Millersville's lineup. In the top of the first, she doubled home Devan Masciulli and Rebecca Blatt, who led off with back-to-back walks. In the sixth, Willenbrock gave Millersville some breathing room with an RBI single that brought home Sam Fried. Willenbrock went 2-for-4 and Aleese Angelo went 2-for-3.

GAME TWO (LOCK HAVEN 4, MILLERSVILLE 3)
• Twice Millersville rallied from a deficit to tie the game, but both times, Lock Haven retaliated in the bottom of the inning to retake the leads. With Millersville trailing 2-0 in the fourth, Gabriella D'Ottavio smashed a two-run homer to tie the game. Lock Haven immediately retook the lead in the bottom of the inning on an RBI single from Morgan Karas. Angelo's two-out, solo home run tied the game at 3-3 in the fifth, but Lock Haven's Riley McClellan hit a solo home run of her own in the bottom of the inning.
• Millersville's scoring opportunities were few. It managed five hits and drew three walks against Waltman who went the distance and struck out 10. Angelo, Blatt and Gabi Turner each reached base two times with a hit and a walk. Morgan Crutcher (5-3) took the loss after allowing four runs in five innings. Maddie Guinane pitched two scoreless innings in relief.

POSTGAME REACTION FROM COACH JEN PROBST
On Schaeffer's game one performance: "Alex hit her spots and mixed speeds well. When runners got on she stepped it up a level."
On Lock Haven keeping the lineup in check: "We left a lot of runners on. I was happy to see a lot more quality at bats, but we were missing the timely, clutch hit or fly ball."

NOTES
• In each of the last three doubleheaders, Millersville has won game one but lost game two. The game two losses was also Millersville's third one-run loss.
• Willenbrock's six-game hitting streak was stopped in game two, and it marked the first time all season that she did not score a run in either game of a doubleheader.
• Angelo has hit in eight-straight games dating back to March 11.

UP NEXT
• Millersville steps away from PSAC East play Wednesday for a home doubleheader vs. Bowie State.
