Marauders looking to gain ground in standings in weekend series with West Chester

ABOUT THE SERIES

  • Millersville enters a the weekend's PSAC East series with West Chester looking to make up ground in the PSAC standings. Currently at 9-11 in the division, the Marauders are four wins behind Shippensburg but just a 1 1/2 games behind East Stroudsburg. Millersville has split all four series with teams above it in the standings. After a 13-day layoff in March because of health and safety guidelines, Millersville played several games without a full complement of players. Since regaining its full squad, Millersville is 7-7. Eight of Millersville's final 12 PSAC East games left come against teams currently in the bottom two spots in the standings. 
  • Millersville has played especially well at home, posting an 11-5 record at Seaber Stadium compared to a 4-6 mark on the road. 
  • Faith Willenbrock has been dominant at the plate, ranking third in the PSAC in average (.469) while ranking second in homers (14) and second in slugging percentage (1.086). She ranks ninth among all active Division II players in career home runs and has played 51 fewer career games than any player ahead of her in the rankings. The current active leader has 55 career homers. Willenbrock's career slugging percentage of .829 ranks third among active players. This season, she is second in home runs per game (0.54) and sixth in slugging. 
  • As a team, the Marauders lead the PSAC in home runs and rank second nationally in home runs per game (1.69). 
  • A trio of Marauder rookies have made a significant impact. Aleese Angelo, while missing eight games, is slashing .350/.443/.717 with seven home runs. She has recorded two or more hits in seven of her 18 games. In the circle, Morgan Crutcher ranks in the PSAC's top 10 in innings pitched with 64 1/3. She is coming off a performance against Shepherd in which she did not allow an earned run in 6 2/3 innings. Prior to her last relief outing, Alex Schaefer went five appearances and 16 1/3 innings with just one run allowed and no walks issued. 

 

SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS

  • West Chester had made the NCAA Tournament in seven consecutive years and was 12-3 when the 2020 season was canceled. It started 2021 with a six-game winning streak and was at one point 8-1. Since March 25, West Chester is 7-5, including dropping three of four to Shepherd and splitting a doubleheader with East Stroudsburg. 
  • West Chester boasts the PSAC's top lineup. It leads the league with a .355 average and is averaging 8.15 runs per game. Collectively, the team has impressive discipline at the plate, drawing 78 walks in 20 games and it is the only team in the PSAC to walk more than it has struck out. The .438 on base percentage is a PSAC-best. Once on the bases, West Chester is aggressive, swiping 48 bases in 51 tries.
  • The lineup is led by Bri Garber's .443 average. Grace Aguilar is hitting .400 and leads the team with a .507 OBP. While every starter is hitting at least .293, only one starting pitcher has an ERA under 5.56, and the team owns a 5.04 ERA. Mary Picozzi leads the team with 11 starts, 53 1/3 innings and a 3.88 ERA but has struck out 23 while walking 26.

SERIES HISTORY

  • The first meeting came in 1983, and the teams did not meet in 2020 as the season was canceled in March before PSAC East play began. West Chester has had Millersville's number of late, winning 12 in a row. Millersville has struggled to score against West Chester, totaling more than four runs in a game just once since 2011 (35 games). West Chester has won via shutout 10 times in that stretch. 
  • Millersville's last win against West Chester came by a 3-2 score in the 2016 PSAC Tournament. Millersville and West Chester also split the season series in 2016. Millersville has not won at West Chester since April 2, 2008.
  • The last time the two teams met for a doubleheader (2019), West Chester won by scores of 9-2 and and 6-4. Hunter Little drove in three runs in the two games.
