RINDGE, N.H. -Â Millersville's NCAA Tournament Third Round matchup against No. 4 Franklin Pierce ended almost identically to its most recent match in the second round, as
Bobby Bosch made a key penalty kick save and
Bob Hennessey fired his clinching try past the Franklin Pierce keeper to lift the Marauders to an NCAA Quarterfinals berth.
Each team netted a goal in regulation.
Aaron Maynard converted his third of the season off a corner from
Spencer Shortt in the first half, which was the Marauders' only corner of the match, and Antonio Santos Ferreira sending the equalizer past Bosch in the 47th minute. Although the score was even, Millersville was on its heels for virtually the entire match, getting out-shot 28-6, including a 9-3 edge on frame. However, the score stayed locked at one through regulation and two overtime periods to send the game to PK's. From that point on it was all 'Ville, as they converted each PKÂ to go along with Bosch's save to move on.
Bosch was instrumental in the Marauders advancement, making save-after-save and directing his teammates for all 110 minutes of play. The keeper finished with eight saves and a PK stop against the Ravens' leading scorer, Braudilio Rodrigues, that helped clinched the PK win.
Millersville moves on to the NCAA Quarterfinals for the first time since the 2013 season, when it was still the Atlantic Region Championship. They will face off with defending national champions, Charleston (W. Va.), on Saturday, Dec. 4 at 1 p.m. in Rindge N.H.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 8' | Bosch's first spectacular save of the game came early when Raven, Jonas Anchel, fired a shot from the left side of the field and well outside the box. The ball made its way just under the crossbar and was met by a diving Bosch who directed it into the crossbar to keep the match scoreless.
- 21' | Matteo Adiletta sent Millersville's first shot of the match towards keeper, Kosta, Maniatis, which resulted in a save out of bounds and a corner for the Marauders. Shortt then dropped a ball 10 yards in front of the right post that was able to find the foot of Maynard and roll into the back right corner of the Raven net to put 'Ville up one.
- 47' | The Ravens evened the score early in second-half play. Valero Rodrigues made his way past Marauder defender on the left wing and centered a ball 10 yards out for Santos Ferreira, who slid into the pass, sending it off his right foot straight down the middle of 'Ville's goal.
- 56' | Bosch came up with possibly his biggest saves in regulation. Stopping a diving header try from Antonio Ferreira that led to another shot from Franklin Pierce's Rodrigues, which the keeper saved again.
- 1OT | The Marauders sent one shot towards FPU during the first overtime period, as Nik Provazzo's try went far left. The Raven's were able to come up with three shots, one resulting in a Bosch save.
- 2OT | Double overtime was all about Millersville surviving, as the Marauders sent away two Raven shots in 10 minutes to send the third-round match to PK's.
- PK | Bosch dove right in the third round of PK's to meet, and stop, a ball sent from Braudilio that changed the momentum of the game for what felt like the first time of the afternoon. Every Marauder converted their PK chance, this includes, Anthony Calamia, Matteo Adiletta, Spencer Shortt, Jake Altimore, and of course, Bob Hennessey with the fireworks.
POST GAME REACTION FROM HEAD COACH STEVE WIDDOWSON
- On the performance of goalkeeper Bobby Bosch:Â "Bobby was immense for us today. We knew we would need a few big saves from him today and a bit of luck and we got both. Bobby made some crucial saves for us, but every player on the field defended and made blocks and earned the little bit of luck we needed."
- On the team coming up with a win in a hostile environment: "It was a massive part of our game plan. We knew we were not going to have the ball much today, but we had it less than we hoped, and was the only area we let ourselves down in. However, the commitment to defending and the work put into it was outstanding. We tried to press when we could, but they are an excellent team so we had to balance pressing with being patient and then deal with the critical situations well. For 110 minutes we did that well enough and I could not be prouder of the effort and performance."
POST GAME REACTION FROM BOBBY BOSCH
- On the mindset going into the game: "Just play our game, it's what it has been the whole year. Everyone's counted us out, I mean, I don't know how much more we have to prove, we've been proving people wrong all season."
