Pottstown, Pa. – The Millersville University women's golf squad earned its second consecutive Ursinus Fall Invitational championship at the par-71, 5,995 yard Raven's Claw Golf Course.
The Marauders finished first of nine teams as they ended the tournament with a one-day total of 345. That was 25 strokes clear of second place host Alvernia which shot a 370.
TOURNAMENT HIGHLIGHTS
• Sophomore Hannah Yanoski just missed out on winning the individual title as she finished second with an 11-over 82. Yanoski had a rough start to the round beginning 5-over in the first three holes. Then, she fired two birdies and two bogies to end the front nine at 41. Yanoski kept it consistent on the back-nine with a 41, concluding the round with three pars.
• Fellow Marauder, senior Danielle Greene, was right behind Yanoski. Greene tied for third with a 12-over 83. Greene came out strong at the start, paring the first four holes but had trouble on the last few holes of the front nine to finish with a 45. She bounced back on her back-nine going 1-over in the first six holes. Greene rounded the back nine out with a team-low 38.
• Junior Joelie Bennett shot an 18-over 89 with a back-nine 39. Bennett finished in seventh place which was her first top-10 finish this season.
• Earning her first top-10 performance at Millersville, Alexandra Craig carded a 20-over 91. Craig tied for 10th place. Her fellow freshman Cassandra Vogel rounded the squad out finishing in a tie for 16th with a 98.
HEAD COACH SCOTT VANDEGRIFT QUOTES
• "The women winning was nice for them and showed that the hard work is starting to pay off. I am really happy that Hannah and Danielle finished so high. Hannah has been questioning her hard work so that was a nice sign. The other girls are showing great improvement. As we move forward, that is going to help. It is always nice when you win. It gives you more energy when you get out there and practice so I am very encouraged."
• "The three upperclassmen were our low scorers which is a nice sign. I think the biggest change is that I see Hannah is starting to evolve and it is a matter of time before she starts punching into the 70's. I think the three upperclassman, as we move into the bulk of the season, we have a number of players on our team that have the capability to play in the low 80's and break 80."
• "They were happy that they won but they had numerous things that they know that they need to work on. That they felt they fell short individually. They are not satisfied with winning."
NOTES
• Yupha Muzyka of host Alvernia captured the medalist with a 6-over 77.
• Bennett earned her fourth top-10 finish of her career while Yanoski posted her fifth and Greene captured her 21st.
• This was the fourth time the Marauders have won this tournament.
