Millersville falls to Shippensburg on Homecoming Saturday

Millersville, Pa. - Millersville forced five turnovers but couldn't take advantage of Shippensburg's miscues in Saturday's 37-0 loss at Chryst Field at Biemesderfer Stadium.

Marcel Mingo intercepted the PSAC's passing leader Brycen Mussina twice, and the defense recovered three fumbles. Millersville started two of its first three offensive possessions inside Shippensburg territory but could not put points on the board and was shut out for the first time since 2016. Millersville's three quarterbacks combined for 13 of 31 passing for 91 yards and were sacked seven times. Only two of Millersville's drives had more than five plays, and six of the drives posted negative yardage. Tyler Reiman finished with 10 punts.

Shippensburg out-gained Millersville 493-154 and rushed for a season-high 258 yards. Marcus Lominy led the Raiders with 93 rushing yards.

Millersville (2-5, 2-2 PSAC East) had won two games in a row while Shippensburg (3-4, 1-2 PSAC East) had lost four in a row--although the last three were by a combined total of 13 points.

"Today was very disappointing," said Millersville head coach J.C. Morgan. "We talked about taking the next step and in order for us to do that we need to win games like this. We have to be competitive in games like this, and we really weren't today.

"Offensively we couldn't put anything together," said Morgan. "(Shippenburg) has some good guys on defense and match up with us well in some spots. We weren't able to make enough plays to sustain any momentum even after the turnovers we caused."

A pair of early interceptions from Mingo gave Millersville the opportunity to jump out to an early lead. On Shippensburg's third snap of the game, Mussina's pass was deflected into the air by a Marauder and Mingo hauled it in for his second pick of the season. Millersville's drive started at the Shippensburg 42 but went in reverse before a punt. Two plays later, Mingo picked off Mussina at the 27. Millersville went backward four yards once again, and the drive ended on a missed 49-yard field goal attempt by Joey Farley. Shippensburg turned that Marauder missed opportunity into the first touchdown of the game, covering 69 yards on eight plays. Mussina connected with Shea O'Donnell for 10 yards.

Millersville shared snaps between Collin Shank and Tony Staffieri but neither could pilot extended drives. Staffieri provided 47 rushing yards on nine carries but attempted just four passes. He also exited the game with an injury late in the third quarter after a run to the Shippensburg 1-yard-line. That drive, too, came up empty, however, as the Marauders were backed up with a false start and stalled with a pair of incomplete passes.

Shippensburg had built a 23-0 lead at that point, scoring two touchdowns and kicking a 33-yard field goal in the second quarter.

Millersville finished with a season low in passing yards and total yards.

The Marauders' defense generated at least three turnovers for the fourth consecutive week and five for the second week in a row. In the last four games, Millersville has totaled 10 interceptions, six fumble recoveries and 10 sacks.

Zach Button led Millersville with a career-high 13 tackles and 1 1/2 tackles for loss. Lucas Bush finished with 11 tackles, a half-tackle for loss, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Trejon Dinkin's 12 tackles gives him double-digit stops in five of seven games.

Millersville hosts Malone on Oct. 20 for the first-ever meeting between the programs.

"We still have four weeks of football left," said Morgan. "We're building something. It's okay to be upset, but we're not going to be discouraged to the point that we're not moving forward. In order to keep moving forward we have to show up and get back to work."
