GAME OVERVIEW
• Third-ranked Millersville opens up the season on Saturday with a noon start time against the fifth-ranked Stonehill Skyhawks. The Marauders will be looking to continue their streak of starting the season off right. Since 2010, Millersville has gone 7-0 in season openers while outscoring opponents in those games 31-3. In 2016, Millersville started the year off with a 5-0 win that set the pace for a 17-5 season and PSAC Championship. The 2016 campaign's PSAC Tournament play was iconic, as Millersville downed No.1 East Stroudsburg and No. 2 Shippensburg in consecutive days. In the final four of the NCAA tournament, Shippensburg defeated Millersville 1-0 to end their season.
• Eighteen players return for Millersville in 2017, including several starters. There will plenty of new faces too though, as 10 of the Marauders' players are freshmen. Plenty of these young, talented freshmen will likely see time on the field, as Millersville head coach
Shelly Behrens is known for using anyone and anything to get the best results. In nine seasons as a head coach, Behrens has oversaw four different PSAC Freshman of the Year award winners. Nine freshmen during that time have been named to the Synapse Sports All-Rookie team.
• Millersville returns leading goal scorer
Aliza Mizak, who is the only Marauder to ever be named All-America in each of her first two seasons. She has already tallied 18 career goals, including eight in 2017.Â
ABOUT THE SERIES
• 2016 marked the first meeting between Millersville and Stonehill. Millersville earned plenty of corners (12) but only managed four shots on goal in a 2-0 loss to the Skyhawks. This matchup will be the first on Millersville's turf as the Marauders look to even the series against a strong Stonehill squad.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
• Stonehill has become one of the premier teams in Division II field hockey. The Skyhawks are ranked fifth in the country to start the season, but being in the top 10 has become the norm for them lately. In both 2014 and 2015 the Skyhawks made a run to the national semifinal. Last year, Stonehill went 14-6 over the course of the season. The team received an NCAA tournament bid, but were eliminated in the first round. Stonehill struggled the road, going 6-4 in such games as compared to going 8-2 at home.
• Millersville must keep junior Kacie Smith in check. Smith scored 22 goals in 2016 en route to being named NE-10 and NFHCA East Region Player of the Year. She has totaled 36 goals in her first two seasons. Junior goalkeeper Sara Freedman enters her third season as the team's fulltime starter. She owns a 36-14 career record and was All-NE-10 Second Team last season.Â
