Millersville, Pa. - In what was quite possibly the hardest fought game of the year, No. 5 Millersville defeated No. 4 St. Anselm to earn the right to move on to the NCAA Division II Semifinals 1-0 in a shoot-out.
After 100 minutes of scoreless field hockey, the NCAA Quarterfinal went into a shoot-out. Aliza Mizak, fourth in Millersville's lineup, scored the clinching goal. With Millersville up 2-1 in the shoot-out, Mizak took a shot that was saved. As her eight-second shot clock wound down, she was able to take one more shot, pushing the ball into the net to end the game.
Annabelle Tierney preceded Mizak's goal with a shoot-out goal of her own to give Millersville to lead. Tierney pivoted in front of the goalkeeper, reversing direction and firing high into the corner of the cage. Kyra Brakefield started the period with with a second-effort goal.
Millersville goalkeeper Kylee Bair did the rest. Bair saved two of the three shots she faced, blocking the final attempt by aggressively attacking the shooter and booting the ball out of the circle.
Bair faced nine shots in the game and seven shots on goal, yet she did not allow a goal, making seven saves in the win.
The victory sends Millersville to the NCAA Semifinals for the fourth time in five years. Last year, it was in the semifinal round that Millersville's season came to an end. It nearly ended in the quarterfinals today. The first overtime ended with Kylee Bair saving a shot with only five seconds left, adding even more intensity to an already tense game.
St. Anselm attacked early and often, taking six shots and forcing Bair to make four saves in the opening nine minutes. The Hawks took seven corners, whereas Millersville had three. The Marauders also only attempted six shots in the game--all of which came after halftime. But after the opening salvo, Millersville held St. Anselm without a shot in the second half and three in the two overtime periods.
Millersville's defense, along with Bair, held the Hawks scoreless the entire way through the game. The Hawks entered the game ranked No. 2 in the nation in scoring, averaging more than 4.0 goals per game. It was only the third loss of the season for the Hawks.
With the win the Marauders will head to Louisville, Ky. to take on No. 1 seed LIU Post with a berth to the national championship game on the line. The game against the top seed is scheduled for Nov. 17 at 1 p.m.
