Millersville downs Slippery Rock for second time
9/28/2016 6:30:00 PM | Field Hockey
Millersville, Pennsylvania - Wednesday's PSAC field hockey game between Millersville and Slippery Rock was a closely contested if you saw only the score--a 1-0 Marauder victory. But for those in attendance on the rainy day, what they saw was different. Millersville outshot its PSAC opponent 12-1, allowing zero shots on goal. Margaret Thorwart was the player who broke through for Millersville, finding the back of the net after a well-executed, first half corner.
The game's lone score came following a corner from Kathleen Bishop. Bishop hit Thorwart with a perfect pass. Thoorwart stepped just inside the circle and slashed a shot from 15 yards out to put Millersville in the lead. The goal would eventually help Millersville improve to 7-1 (2-0 PSAC) on the season.
The Rock gave the home fans a scare late in the game with their first and only shot. With 2:11 remaining, Hannah Shirk deflected a pass from outside the circle, but the ball sailed high over the cage.
It wasn't the only close call of the game. Olivia Hershey had two shots on goal in two minutes, but each was saved. Moments later, with just under 15 minutes to play, Lexi Robinson attempted a shot that was blocked in front of the keeper.
The Marauders dominated time of possession and field position, putting six shots on goal. Millersville also had 10 corners to The Rock's three.
Rumler was not forced to make a save in the win. Her individual record improved to 7-1 with the victory.
Slippery Rock fell to 3-6 (0-2) on the year.
Millersville's next contest is another PSAC game, as they head to Seton Hill Saturday for a 1 p.m. start against the 2-6 Griffins. The Marauders defeated Seton Hill earlier this season--a 3-0 win at home on Sept. 10.
