GAME NOTES
• The Millersville softball team enter the weekend with a pair of doubleheaders against familiar PSAC East foes. The Marauders will travel to Shippensburg on Friday afternoon for a twin bill before returning home to host West Chester on Saturday at the Millersville Softball Field. With only four conference games remaining, Millersville controls its own destiny. The Black & Gold currently sit third in the PSAC East and are on the verge of earning their first trip to the PSAC Tournament in program history.
• The Marauders most recently split a doubleheader with East Stroudsburg with the team combining for 20 hits on the afternoon. Millersville nearly rallied in the bottom of the seventh inning of game one before eventually falling 5-4, but the long ball powered the Marauders to a 10-2 win in the nightcap.
Brittany Smith and
Maria Spinosa hit a pair of three-run homers in the first inning, which gave
Cassidy Pinchorski more than enough support in the circle. Pinchorski only allowed one earned run on six hits across five innings of work. For Smith it was her third home run of the season and she now has 10, which moved her into a tie for sixth on the program's career home run chart.
• Millersville has consistently made solid contact at the plate this season and have a combined team batting average of .294.
Mandy Hammond,
Megan McCurdy,
Brittany Smith,
Megan Hallock, and
Heather Lutz own batting averages above .300. Millersville has also received clutch hitting and solid production off of the bench from
Melanie Snyder and
Jamie Trewhella who each own batting averages over .380 in limited playing time. Trewhella is 12-for-31 (.387) at the dish and Snyder is 9-of-22 (.409).
• Outfielders
Heather Lutz and
Megan Hallock have been on a tear at the plate steadily improving each of their respective batting averages. Hallock returned from Spring Break with a .171 batting average and over the past 14 games she has had 17 hits including five multi-hit games to improve her average to its current .319. Lutz has been the table setter of the offensive attack out of her lead-off position in
Jen Probst lineup. She is in the midst of a 10-game hit streak and has had seven multi-hit games during the current streak. Lutz has already career highs in triples (2), RBIs (17), stolen bases (3) and has yet to commit an error in her 123 career games played.
• When looking at the PSAC statistical rankings, the Marauders rank fifth in the conference with its .294 batting average, eighth with 146 runs scored, fifth in doubles (47) and eighth in team ERA (3.08).
• Millersville was ranked No. 10 in the initial NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Ranking which was released Wednesday afternoon. The rankings determine the field for the NCAA Tournament as the top eight teams from each region securing NCAA Tournament bids. West Chester was ranked No. 1.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT
• West Chester has yet to drop a conference game this season and are a perfect 8-0 within the PSAC East Division. The Golden Rams feature the reigning PSAC East athletes of the week Cat Hammer and Katie Erb. Hammer went a combined 8-for-15 (.533) at the plate with one double, two home runs and eight RBI to go along with six runs scored in leading West Chester to a 4-0 week. Erb was 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA in 10.1 innings of work last week. Coming off a concussion injury that kept her sidelined for a couple of weeks, Erb did not allow a run at all while surrendering just eight hits, walking one and striking out six.
• The Golden Rams can flat out hit. They are hitting a combined .338, which is top mark in the PSAC and have hit 56 doubles, 16 triples and 31 home runs. West Chester is extremely active on the base paths, totaling 85 stolen bases on the season. Sarah Walasavage, Madison Kelly, Sara Ercolani, Cat Hammer, Monica Twardowski and Alyssa Herion all enter with batting averages over .330.
