Exton, Pa. - Playing without senior captain and top player Jaimie Wharton, the Millersville women's golf team finished ninth in a 12-team field at the Dr. Edwin B. Cottrell Invitational Monday. The majority of the two rounds were played Monday because of weekend rain.
Millersville entered as the reigning champion of the event and had not finished lower than third in any tournament in 2015-16. But without Wharton--the team's scoring leader and owner of five top-10 finishes--the Marauders posted a two-round score of 717. It was their highest score of the season. Millersville closed the first round with a 351, which was good for sixth place. But the team slid down the leadboard after a 366 in the second.
Danielle Freed finished in a tie for 11th with a 14-over-par total on the par-72 course. She was 12 stroke behind winner Diana Munoz of Gannon. Danielle Greene opened with a 10-over-par 82 and sat in eighth after the opening round. But her 94 in round two moved her nine places down the leaderboard into a tie for 17th. Kendal Olear shot a season-best round of 88 in the first and finished in a tie for 27th. Alexa Strong rounded out the scoring in a tie for 44th.
Kutztown won the team title with a 683 total, edging Merrimack by two.
Millersville closes its regular season on April 17-18 in the ESU Spring Invitational.
