GAME NOTES• Already boasting a 9-7 record after a successful Spring Break trip to the Carolina's, the Millersville Marauders make their home debut on Thursday. Shepherd travels to the Millersville Softball Field in hopes of upending a Marauder team that won five of its six games at the Fast Pitch Dreams Classic.
• Millersville has hit the ball extremely well to begin the season with a combined batting average of .294. Three of the Marauder regular starters:
Mandy Hammond, Megan McCurdey and
Maria Spinosa own batting averages above .300. Nobody was hotter at the plate than Hammond who is in the midst of an eight-game hitting streak that has included seven multi-hit games. In the Marauders final eight games down south, Hammond went 17-for-27 with four steals, four RBIs and six runs scored in the stretch.
• The Marauders are well on their way to surpassing their home run output from a season ago (22). Through its first 16 games the Ville has clubbed seven homers and are led by
Megan McCurdy and
Kelsey Campbell who have each belted a pair.
• The Black & Gold were picked to finish fourth among five teams in the PSAC Eastern Division after nearly qualifying for the PSAC Tournament last season when they turned in an overall record of 21-24 and an 11-17 mark within the PSAC.
• Senior
Brianna Andraos and sophomore
Cassidy Pinchorski spearhead the Marauder pitching staff. Pinchorski went 9-14 with a 2.38 ERA last season, with 18 complete games, four shutouts and logged a team-high 147 innings. Andraos finished with a team-high 12 wins with a 2.71 ERA, 17 complete games and two shutouts. Both have been as good as advertised early in the season for the Marauders. Andraos (4-5) owns a 2.00 ERA with two shutouts and has worked out of trouble brilliantly. Pinchorski leads the team with wins (5) and has struck out 39 batters in her nine appearances, which ranks ninth in the PSAC.
SCOUTING THE OPPONENT• Shepherd was picked to finish fourth in the North Division of the 2016 MEC Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Rams pitching staff is led by junior Tara Hanson who was named to the 2015 MEC All-Tournament Team after posting a 2-2 overall mark at the conference tournament including a two-hit shutout in a win over Wheeling Jesuit.
• The Rams have begun their season 5-5 and are familiar with the PSAC. Shepherd has a win over Kutztown and losses to Bloomsburg, Mercyhurst, Kutztown and Mansfield. The team has hit .286 through 10 games. Connor Gilligan is a player to watch for the Rams as she has absolutely mashed to begin 2016 with 14 hits including a double, two triples and two homeruns, while sporting a .667 batting average. The first baseman leads the MEC with 13 RBIs.
