Marauders take down Mansfield, clinch PSAC Tournament home game
10/29/2016 3:00:00 PM | Field Hockey
Millersville, Pa. – It took 63 minutes, 29 shots and 24 shots on goal for Millersville to get one goal. But one goal was enough, as the Marauders defeated PSAC rival Mansfield 1-0 to clinch the No. 4 seed and home field advantage in the first round of the PSAC Tournament.
Mansfield goalkeeper Laura Lawson did all she could in the loss, saving 25 of the 26 shots on goal that she faced, but she could not stop Carly Castle's.
With a mess of players in front of the goal, Castle received a high pass from Margaret Thorwart and sent it into the left corner of the net, giving Millersville all it needed to hold on and win.
"Margo (Thorwart) gave me a great pass," said Castle, "I was just trying to keep the ball in play."
Castle's goal came with only 6:35 remaining after the Marauders harassed Mansfield's defense all game, taking 31 shots and 23 corners.
"She had a nice finish," said head coach Shelly Behrens on the goal, "It was just a matter of time. We just kept going and going."
Going and going is right. On multiple occasions it seemed as though Millersville would score, only to be thwarted by Lawson. Thorwart hounded Lawson with six shots on goal, and Aliza Mizak, Olivia Hershey, and Erica Tarsi each forced Lawson to make four saves in the game.
"I give her all the credit in the world," said Castle. "She's a great keeper."
Millersville's regular season is over, but the post season is about to begin.
"To me, a whole new season starts," said Behrens, whose team is in the mix for the NCAA tournament as well.
With the win, Millersville is set to host Bloomsburg in the PSAC tournament on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. The Marauders beat Bloomsburg earlier this year, 2-1.
