Volleyball battles from behind to top West Chester in five-set thriller

Millersville, Pennsylvania - There was no give-up in the Millersville women's volleyball team Saturday in Pucillo Gymnasium. The Marauders rallied in sets two, four and five to knock off PSAC Southeast Division leader West Chester in a seesaw, five-set thriller, 23-25, 25-23, 21-25, 26-24, 15-13.
The match featured 32 tied scores in the five sets and only one set (the fourth) was decided by more than two points. Junior Erin Harman delivered her second 20-kill match of the season, and freshman Haley Butler recorded a career-high 17 kills. Grace Dawson provided 50 helpers, and Katie Laughman made a career-high 38 digs.
Millersville improved to 7-12 overall and 4-5 in PSAC action with the win, and has now won five of its last seven matches.
West Chester opened the afternoon by scoring the first six points of the opening set. But as would happen all match, the Marauders rallied evened the score at 22-22 after a kill from Butler. Millersville trailed 24-23 after a service error but West Chester held on to the set win with a kill from Karleigh Lutz.
Millersville evened the match in the second set but trailed as late as 20-18. Harman stepped in to serve and picked up three consecutive points for the Marauders. After trading points to make the score 23-23, Dawson snuck in a kill, and a WCU error end the set.
West Chester took back the advantage with a with a third-set win in which it hit .261. And the Golden Rams were on the verge of clinching the match in set four, leading 23-20. But back-to-back kills from Harman and Kara Wirt kept the Marauders alive, and Dawson served an ace to even the score. Dawson, however, gave the point right back with an error, but Harman recorded a kill to extend the set. Harman took over service and following a WCU error, Harman delivered a well-placed serve for an ace, giving Millersville a 26-24 comeback win.
The Marauders again found themselves in dire straits in the deciding fifth set, trailing 9-4 after West Chester started the match with six kills in that stretch. A Millersville timeout slowed the West Chester momentum, and out of the break, West Chester committed three errors and Harman recorded an ace to even the score at 9-9.
West Chester rebuilt its lead to 12-10, but Kelsi Ceriani scored on a kill, Lexy Coldsmith tied the set with an ace, and Butler put the Marauders on top with a kill. A service error retied the set at 13-13, but Butler and Harman sealed the Marauders' win with back-to-back kills.
The win ended West Chester's three-match win streak in the series. Millersville travels to Elizabethtown on Oct. 18 and hosts a Homecoming weekend back-to-back beginning Friday against Lock Haven.
