Marietta, Ohio - Millersville women's golf has done it again. Shannon Weber and Danielle Greene tied for first and the Marauders claimed their second consecutive team title, winning the Ohio Valley Invitational at Marietta Country Club by 20 shots.
Millersville has won six of the last nine tournaments it has entered and Monday's title came against a field of 15 teams, 13 of which are NCAA region competitors for the Marauders. Weber had finished fourth and third in her first two events of 2015-16 and made a jump to the top of the leaderboard this event, shooting rounds of 77 and 80 to finish at 13-over-par. She shared the medalist honor with Greene, her rookie teammate. Greene opened with an 80 and closed with a 77 to pull even with Weber. The duo finished three shots in front of the third-place finisher.
The win is the seventh of Weber's young career. She has finished in the top five in nine consecutive tournaments and in the top 10 of 14 of 16 career tournaments. Greene's shared first-place finish comes in just her third career event, which is makes her the fastest Marauder ever to win a tournament.
Millersville opened with a 328, eight shots ahead of Kutztown. The Marauders pulled away from the pack in the second round, firing a 323 total--10 shots lower than any other team in the field.
The Marauders' score was also helped by Jaimie Wharton's 10th-place finish. Wharton shot rounds of 83 and 85 or her ninth top-10 in her last 10 events. Jennifer Gentry tied for 17th at 28-over-par. Her second round 81 matched the lowest 18-hole score of her career. Danielle Freed tied for 31st and Alexa Strong, playing as an individual, tied for 39th in the 51-player field.
