Kutztown, Pa. - With senior Jaimie Wharton leading the charge, the Millersville women's golf team won its third consecutive tournament Monday, running away from the Kutztown Invitational field with a 16-stroke victory.
The Marauders were on top of the leaderboard for the seventh time in the last 10 tournaments after shooting rounds of 336 and 326. They closed the opening round with a 13-shot lead over Kutztown and West Chester and built upon it by shooting three shots better than Kutztown in round two.
Three Marauders finished in the top five and all four counting scores cracked the top 10. Wharton became the third different Marauder to finish with medalist honors this season. Now with five career first-place finishes, Wharton scored her first win since the Marauder Icebreaker in March of 2015. She posted back-to-back 80's on the par-70 Moselem Springs course. Her consistency was enough to fend off a charge from Kutztown's Hope Giordano, who finished two shots behind after a tournament-best 77 on day two.
Sophomore Shannon Weber grabbed her fourth top-four finish in as many events this season. She bounced back from an opening 83 with an 80 in the second. Danielle Greene, fresh off a playoff win in her last event, tied for fifth at 29-over-par. Danielle Freed improved her score by four shots in the second round and finished 10 shots off the pace in eighth place.
Senior Kendal Olear, seeing her first action of the 2015-16 season finished 17th competing as an individual.
The win was a proper tune-up for the PSAC Championships, which is two weeks away. The Marauders figure to be contenders as they have a head-to-head win over every team in the league except for California (Pa.), which they have yet to see in a tournament. California has won five of the seven championships contested. Millersville's best-ever finish, coming in 2014, was seventh.
