Erie, Pa. - Millersville women's golf set a program record with its best one-round team score on Sunday, and did it again on Monday, winning with the Michael Corbett Fall Classic at Lake Shore Country Club with a team-best, 36-hole total of 636.
The Marauders posted a 319 in the opening round and carried a five-stroke lead into the second round. The quartet of Shannon Weber, Jaimie Wharton, Danielle Greene and Danielle Freed combined for a 317 on Monday, giving the the Marauders a five-shot win over runner-up Wheeling Jesuit. The previous best two-round team score was a 655 set last spring at the East Stroudsburg Invitational.
The win is arguably the most significant in the program's seven-year history as it bested 17 teams. It marked the second 36-hole tournament win for the program and the first win with more than 10 teams in the field. Millersville has now won six of the last 11 tournaments it has entered.
Weber posted back-to-back rounds of 76 to set her own school record for the lowest individual 36-hole score. She had previously set the mark at 155 last spring. She finished in a tie for third place, extending her streak of consecutive top-five finishes to eight.
Wharton also cracked the top 10, following Sunday's 79 with a 5-over-par 77 on Monday. Her 13-over total matches her 36-hole best, which was shot at the same tournament last season. Greene and Freed flip-flopped scores of 84 and 80, finishing in a tie for 20th at 20-over-par.
Millersville has a week away from competition and returns to action at the Ohio Valley Invitational on Sept. 27.
