Indiana, Pa. - With the NCAA Atlantic/East Super Regional just two weeks away, it is difficult to find a golfer playing any better than Millersville senior
Conor Gilbert. Gilbert scored his third career win and fifth consecutive top-four finish by firing a 2-under-par 69 in the second round of the Cecil C. Spadafora Invitational. The Marauders finished fifth as a team.
Gilbert opened with an even-par 71 and closed with the best score of the final round. His 2-under, 36-hole score was the best of his career. He edged four other golfers by one shot. Since the start of the spring season, Gilbert has finished third, second, fourth, second and first in five tournaments.Gilbert's last tournament win came at the 2013 PSAC Championship.
Millersville was ranked No. 5 in the most recent NCAA Atlantic Region rankings and certainly solidified that standing with Monday's fifth-place finish. The conference champions from the PSAC and Mountain East receive automatic bids followed by eight at-large teams. Of the seven regionally-ranked teams in the field, Millersville finished ahead of West Chester, Charleston and Notre Dame College.
The Marauders' second round 291 was the second-lowest team score of the round and was a four-shot improvement from the previous day. Millersville finished at 18-over-par for the tournament, eight shots behind winning Allegheny College.
Robby Rowe opened with a 4-over-par 75 but responded nicely with an even-par 71 in the second round. He finished in a tie for 16th.
Connor Sheehan started the tournament with a career-best 72 and closed with a 75 to finish at 5-over and in a tie for 20th.
Rodney Anders placed in a tie for 40th and Brett Howey placed in a tie for 43rd.
The Cecil C. Spadafora Invitational was the final tournament on Millersville's regular season schedule. The field for the NCAA Super Regional will be determined this week and action from the Longaberger Club in Nashport, Ohio beginning on May 4.
