MATCH OVERVIEW• Millersville will try to rip the Rupp Cup away from local rival Franklin & Marshall Thursday evening at 7 p.m. in Pucillo Gymnasium. The Diplomats have held the Cup for four consecutive years. The series has been one of extended runs for both teams. Millersville held the trophy from 2004-2010 before F&M's recent run. The Marauders have not scored more than 13 points in any of the last four losses to the Diplomats. Last year, F&M scored pins in the first three bouts and rolled to a 41-3 win. Millersville's lone win came at 184 pounds from Shane GIlmore. Of wrestlers in last year's dual only
Thomas Nulty, who wrestled 133 pounds last year, is expected to be in the lineup for Millersville on Thursday. Nulty may face a rematch with Robert Ruiz. Ruiz won last year's match-up with a fall at the 1:29 mark.
• With 23 and 21 wins respectively,
Ian Shannon and
Shane Ruhnke are the first Marauder teammates to win 20-plus matches in a season since Shane Smith, Jeremy Brooks and Jarrett Hostetter in 2010. Shannon puts his undefeated dual record of 11-0 on the line against Andrew Francos. With the Super Region 1 Championships still ahead, both freshmen have an opportunity to reach the 25-win mark, a mark only 46 wrestlers in Millersville history has previously hit. Shannon is ranked No. 4 in Super Region 1 at 165 pounds. He is the only Marauder ranked.
• Heavyweight
David Wuestner is one of only two Marauder heavyweights since 2006 to post a record above .500 during the season, and he has done so as a freshman. He has had some tough sledding recently facing No. 1-ranked Ziad Haddad and three of Super Region 1's top six heavyweights in his last four matches.
• Fellow freshman
Alex Baider, wrestling at 125 pounds, has come on strong recently, winning three consecutive dual matches since being inserted into the lineup as the starter. Baider has showed the ability to win low-scoring matches as all of his wins this season have come by decision and he has allowed only one point scored against him in three of his last four wins.
• Thursday is also Senior Day for
Ryan Nielsen and
Brock Thompson. Nielsen is a four-year member of the squad and emerged as a team leader. He is having his best career year with a 5-7 record this season. He has wrestled at three different weight classes for the Marauders. Thompson returned to the team after a year away and has stepped in late in the season wrestling anywhere from 157 to 174 and winning five matches in the process. He has totaled 18 career wins.
• The Rupp Cup is named in the honor of the late Dr. Ted Rupp, who made a significant impact on both programs. Rupp graduated from F&M in 1935 and coached wrestling from 1936-43. After returning from service in World War II, Rupp was hired to teach at Millersville. In 1947, he started the wrestling program and posted a 71-18-2 record in 11 years as the head coach. Rupp was a professor in French and Spanish at Millersville and the chair of the department of foreign languages until he retired in 1979. Rupp passed away on Feb. 11, 2010.
