Millersville

Todd Roberts

Todd Roberts completed his eight season at the helm of the Millersville wrestling program in 2015-16. Had 10 wrestlers compete in the NCAA Super Region 1.

Roberts has helped the program produce six national qualifiers and it has consistently performed as one of the top academic wrestling programs as well.

Roberts helped the program transition into competition at the Division II level in 2012-13. In its first-ever Super Region 1 Championships, three Marauders earned sixth-place finishes. In 2014-15, he coach the first freshmen in program history to record 20-plus wins in a season.

In 2010-11, Roberts led Millersville to its best PSAC Championships finish in three years, and Shane Smith placed as the runner-up at 174 pounds. Smith finished the year ranked second in the country in pins, and Mike Greck qualified for the NCAA Championships at 141 pounds.

Despite dealing with hardship and injuries to his team, Roberts helped Smith and Jarrett Hostetter qualify for the NCAA Championships in 2010, and Hostetter was the PSAC runner-up at 157 pounds. It was a continuation of success from his first year on the job.

In 2009-10, Roberts produced one of the most successful seasons in recent years. Three Marauders qualified for the NCAA Championships and five finished in the top two at the NCAA East Regional. The team finished second at the regional and also posted a 9-8 dual record, marking the first time in four seasons the team had finished above .500. Shane Smith and Jeremy Brooks also became the first Marauder teammates since 1998 to win 30 matches in a season.

Roberts' efforts were recognized by his peers when he was voted the NCAA East Region Coach of the Year.

Roberts has had several wrestlers named NWCA All-Academic, and the team was one of just 10 programs in the sport to earn a NCAA Public Recognition Award. The award is given annually to teams scoring in the top 10 percent in each sport with their Academic Progress Rate (APR).

Prior to his appointment as head coach in August of 2008, Roberts served as an assistant for at Millersville for four seasons.

The York, Pa., native, joined the Millersville staff in September of 2004 under Neil Barnes. As an assistant, Roberts helped the Marauders improve its status in the PSAC and in the NCAA Division I East Region.

In 2008, under Roberts’ guidance, Jarrett Hostetter captured the NCAA Division I East Region Championship at 157 pounds, qualifying for the NCAA Championships for a third-straight year. He was also named PSAC Wrestler of the Week once and carried a 20-match winning streak into nationals. Seven wrestlers finished sixth or better at the PSAC Championships as well.

With Roberts on staff, the team has excelled off the mat as well. In 2005, Curtis Yeager and Mark Knock were both named to the NWCA Division I All-Academic Team.

Roberts took on additional coaching responsibilities during Barnes’ medical leave. He coordinated the “Shorty” Hitchcock Memorial Tournament, started a youth wrestling clinic and an annual picnic for families and alumni.

Roberts’ coaching career began while he was in college at East Stroudsburg, coaching the women’s wrestling team. He also coached at Dallastown High School and at East Stroudsburg with the men’s program.

After beginning his wrestling career at East Stroudsburg, Roberts transferred to York, where he finished his career and received his bachelor’s degree in engineering management in 1999.
