WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - The Millersville wrestling team wrapped up the first half of its season at the Wilkes Open, highlighted by a sixth-place finish from redshirt junior
Dom Flatt.
Flatt led the Marauders while competing at 125 pounds. He opened the tournament with a quick fall to advance to the quarterfinals, where he suffered a loss by pin at 2:05. Flatt responded with back-to-back victories in his next two bouts, earning technical falls in both matches to put himself in position to wrestle for fifth place. He held a 4–2 lead after the first period of the placement match, but the momentum shifted in the second period as the score flipped to 6–4. Flatt then sustained an injury, resulting in a medical forfeit and a sixth-place finish.
Jack Weldon finished the day with a 3–2 record, while freshman Avery Aurand posted a 2–2 mark. Weldon made an impressive run through the consolation bracket after dropping his opening match by fall. The freshman rebounded with three consecutive victories by fall, major decision, and decision that advance him to the consolation semifinals. His day concluded with a 9–6 decision loss. Aurand also advanced to the consolation semifinals. The Lewistown native opened the tournament with a major decision victory before falling by decision in his second bout. He responded with a technical fall in his third match to continue his run before being eliminated by technical fall.
"We saw a lot of positive things today," Head Coach Jerry Boland said. "Certainly Dom, Avery, and Jack going deep into their respective brackets was great to see. They showed a lot of poise and resiliency. It was nice to see these guys getting some well-deserved mat time."
Sophomore Richie DeFulvio returned to competition after missing last weekend's Midwest Classic in Indianapolis due to illness. The New Jersey native opened the day with a strong performance, earning a technical fall at 3:45. He then dropped a narrow 4–2 decision before rebounding with a pin at 2:50 in his third bout. DeFulvio's day concluded with a 14–7 decision loss.
Nick Bennet and Daniel Lloyd each finished the Wilkes Open with 1–2 records. Both Marauders opened the tournament with victories, as Bennet earned a major decision while Lloyd secured a fall at 0:26. Bennet then dropped his next two bouts by decision and major decision, while Lloyd was defeated by technical fall and major decision.
Kurt Scheuerman and Aidan Micheli were also among the Marauders who returned to competition. Scheuerman finished the day with a 1–2 record, while Micheli went 0–2.
Seniors Elias Smith and Colin Higgins competed in the open, with Smith wrestling at 149 pounds and Higgins at 133. Smith opened the tournament with a pin at 6:48 before suffering a 13–7 decision loss and a loss by fall to close his day. Higgins had a short outing, going 0–2 with losses by major decision and decision.
Freshmen Michael Volek, Riley Oakes, and Aaron Menickella returned to the mat for the first time since the Shorty Hitchcock Classic one month ago. Volek opened the day with a loss by technical fall before rebounding in the consolation bracket with a technical fall at 4:58 and a sudden-victory win in his third bout. His tournament concluded with another loss by technical fall. Oakes dropped both of his matches by major decision. Menickella finished the day with a 1–2 record at 133 pounds, losing his opening bout by fall before earning a 3–1 decision victory. His day concluded with a loss by technical fall at 6:12.
"This is a young team, and they continue to improve week by week," Boland said. "They're a coachable group, and we'll continue to make positive adjustments throughout the year. For now, they can take some time off to be with their families."
Following the Wilkes Open, the Marauders have officially reached the midpoint of their season. Millersville will open the second half of its schedule on Friday, January 9, when they travel to Franklin & Marshall to compete in the David H. Lehman Open.
