Sissonville, W.Va. - Millersville men's golf has some unfinished business. After coming within shots of qualifying for the NCAA Division II Championships in 2013, the Marauders are back in the NCAA Atlantic/East Super Regional from May 5-7 at Edgewood Country Club in Sissonville, W.Va.
Millersville, the No. 5 seed from the Atlantic Region, is one of 10 teams from the Atlantic Region and 10 teams froms from the East Region that will compete in the 54-hole event. The top three teams and top two individuals in the tournament move on to the NCAA Championships from May 19-23 at Meadows Golf Course in Allendale, Mich.
The same five golfers that came within four shots of nationals a season ago will against represent the Marauders. In 2013, Robert Coyne, Kevin Davis, Jonathon Heile, Robby Rowe and Conor Gilbert entered the final round in qualifying position but was overtaken by strong rounds from California (Pa.) and Davis & Elkins.
Coyne finished second overall and played at the national championships as an individual. His teammates, after being so close themselves, and watching Coyne play at Hershey Country Club East, returned in 2014 with the singular goal of qualifying for nationals.
Millersville gained an automatic berth to the super regional after winning the PSAC Championship--the program's first since 2003. Millersville bested three of the Atlantic Region's top four teams at the PSAC Championships with a two-round total of 593. Three sub-300 rounds are likely going to be needed at this week's super regional as well.
Millersville's season has been marked with ups and downs but when it is at its best, it's as good as any in the field. The Marauders finished second in a strong Glade Springs Invitatonal field in September and after winning the PSAC Championships, they won the Goldey-Beacom Spring Invitational. Most recently, the Marauders finished fourth in a deep field at the Cecil C. Spadafora Invitational while facing many of the same teams they will compete against this week.
Gilbert and Rowe are among the top-ranked golfers in the region this season. Gilbert won medalist honors at the Bud Elwell Invitational and again at the PSAC Championships in October. Rowe has eight top-10 finishes to his credit. Both golfers own scoring averages of just over 75.
Coyne has not been able to replicate his brilliant junior season but he posted the team's best score at the Messiah Invitational two weeks ago. Heile is also capable of posting low scores. He finished 11th at the PSAC Championships and won the Goldey-Beacom Invitational on April 1. Davis could be the key for the Marauders. He was Millersville's No. 2 finisher at the 2013 super regional after shooting a 12-over-par. As the team's No. 5 golfer most of the season, Millersville will be in great shape this week if Davis can piece together three similar rounds.
Millersville is playing in its ninth NCAA regional event under Coach Scott Vandegrift. Millersville's top competition are PSAC foes IUP, California and West Chester. Charleston and West Liberty from the Mountain East Conference are also expected to be in the mix. East Region representative Wilmington qualified for the NCAA Championships last season. Adelphi is the No. 2 seed from the East.
