MILLERSVILLE, Pa. - Millersville University Director of Athletics Kate Corcoran has announced Matt Shur as the new head coach of the Marauders' men's and women's golf programs. Shur comes to Millersville after leading the Goucher College teams for four seasons, and takes over for Scott Vandegrift, who retired after 40 years in the role.
"We are excited to welcome Matt to lead our men's and women's golf programs," said Corcoran. "Throughout the process Matt clearly articulated a strong vision for the golf programs to build upon the legacy that Coach Vandergrift has built over the past 40 years. Matt has shown an ability to recruit, develop players and fundraise that we believe will serve our programs well and set our programs up for success in the future."
A graduate and golfer at Stevens University, Shur broke into collegiate coaching in 2022. In his time at Goucher, he led the men's team to top-four finishes in the conference championship three times and won four tournaments. The women's program also achieved top-four conference finishes in two of the last three years.
"Millersville is the right fit for me because it combines the type of university culture I value with a region I know extremely well through golf," said Shur. "There is a genuine commitment to supporting student-athletes and that kind of environment is a place where I feel I can make a positive impact. Through playing competitively and working at different Pennsylvania golf courses, I have developed a strong understanding of the golf culture and relationships throughout the region. I am passionate about player development and creating an environment where student-athletes are pushed to improve everyday while enjoying the process. I am very excited about the potential of the program and the chance to continue building a culture that players, alumni, and the university can all be proud of."
In 2025-26, Shur's men's team finished runner-up at the Landmark Conference Fall Preview and then placed third at the Landmark Championship in the spring. Since 2022, he helped nine men's golfers earn All-Landmark Conference honors, and his golfers are responsible for four of the top six season scoring averages in program history. On the women's side, Shur coached Iseline Schenk to the program's best three scoring averages and the lowest single round score in team history. Shur also made a significant impact on the program's facilities as he led fundraising efforts to build an on-campus indoor practice facility.
"I would describe myself as a player-oriented coach who believes in building real relationships with student-athletes and leading by example," said Shur. "As a golfer myself, I understand the mental and physical challenges that come with the game, and I try to use that perspective in the way I coach everyday. One thing that is really important to me is attitude. I believe showing up every day with a positive mindset can shape the culture of an entire program. Golf is a hard sport and there are going to be ups and downs, so I want players that continue to compete and fight through adversity no matter the situation. I believe that confidence is built through preparation and hard work. If our players are willing to put in the work, prepare the right way, and bring a good attitude everyday, the results will take care of themselves."
Before joining Goucher, Shur served as assistant golf professional at Hartefeld National Golf Club in Avondale, Pa., and also spent two years as assistant pro shop manager at Talamore Country Club in Amber, Pa. At both stops he provided individual lessons for golfers of all ages and skill levels. As a golfer at Stevenson, Shur was an GCAA Academic All-America honoree, posting a scoring average of 75.6 and a 3.94 GPA in 2019-20. Shur ranks seventh in program history in scoring average, earned All-MAC Commonwealth honors twice, was a two-time team MVP, and was in the lineup for three MAC Commonwealth championships.
"I want Millersville alum's and supporters to know that I am incredibly grateful and excited for the opportunity to lead this program," said Shur. "My goal is to build a culture built on hard work, positivity, and accountability. It is important to me that our student-athletes represent Millersville the right way both on and off the golf course. I want alumni and supporters to feel connected to the program by building strong relationships, keeping them involved, and creating a team culture that they are proud to support. After 40 years of leadership from Coach Vandegrift, there is an extremely strong foundation already in place. My goal is to honor the traditions that have made the program successful while continuing to help it grow moving forward."
