Sissonville, W.Va. - Millersville men's golf could not mount the charge it needed to finish in NCAA Championship qualifying position and instead finished 12th in the 20-team NCAA Atlantic/East Super Regional. Conor Gilbert finished as Millersville's top finisher in 19th place.
Millersville opened the tournament with a 298 but a second round 305 was followed by Wednesday's 310. Millersville finished with a 913 total. Indiana (Pa.) powered its way to the team title with an 863 total.
Gilbert opened the third round just three shots out of qualifying but it simply was not his day. Starting on the more difficult back nine, Gilbert bogeyed holes 14, 15 and 17 and never recovered. He dropped to 6-over-par on the day before a birdie at the par-5 fifth. Gilbert finished at 6-over on the day and 7-over on the tournament.
Robby Rowe matched Gilbert's 77 and finished at 12-over-par in 38th place. Robert Coyne, a national qualifier in 2013, tied for 58th after shooting the team's best score (76) in the third round. Jonathon Heile finished in 84th and Kevin Davis placed 96th.
Heile and Coyne played their final tournament as Marauders. Heile finished his career with a stroke average of just over 79 in 26 events. He won the Goldey-Beacom Invitational this spring. Coyne played in 35 career tournaments, finished as the runner-up at the 2013 NCAA Super Regional and finished third at the 2012 PSAC Championship. He won two tournaments and earned 11 top-10 finishes. Chris Fieger is also a four-year member of the roster.
The rest of the Millersville roster is expected to return with Davis (RJr.), Gilbert (Jr.) and Rowe (So.) leading the way. Gilbert and Rowe both posted scoring averages of nearly 4-over-par this season and combined for 15 top-10 finishes. Gilbert was the individual medalist at the PSAC Championship.
The 2013-14 season was highlighted by the program's second consecutive trip to the NCAA Super Regional, a PSAC Championship and wins at the Goldey-Beacom Invitational and Messiah Spring Invitational.
