Box Score 2 Banner Elk, N.C. -Â Millersville softball cruised past Lees-McRae 10-0 in game one thanks to 16 hits before falling to the Bobcats in game two by a score of 6-3.
The Marauders (8-6) received yet another great performance from
Brianna Andraos in the first contest and the sophomore hurler has given up just two runs, one earned, in her last 22 innings pitched to pull her season's ERA below one at 0.99. Millersville had a 3-0 advantage in the day's rematch but Lees-McCrae (5-23) used a five-run fifth inning to come from behind for the win.
GAME ONE RECAP
In the top of the second, Andraos stepped to the plate with one out and
Brittany Smith standing on second base. Andraos proceeded to help herself with an RBI double to left center and that marked the sophomore's first two-bagger of the season. One out later,
Jordan Sheffield made it 2-0 in favor of the Marauders with an RBI triple to right center and
Danielle DiFilippo followed with a single through the left side that put Millersville up 3-0. In game one, DiFilippo was a perfect 4-for-4 at the dish with five RBIs and a run scored.
With one out in the third,
Stephanie Kulp reached on an error by the third baseman and Andraos tallied her second hit, a single up the middle, to put runners on first and second for
Maria Spinosa. Spinosa came through with a run-scoring single to center field. One out later, DiFilippo and
Gabbie Berry recorded back-to-back RBI singles and the Marauders were up 7-0 after only 2.2 innings.
Millersville tacked on three more in the fourth with an RBI single off the bat of Sheffield and a two-run double from DiFilippo. Four of the Marauders' last six wins have come with the help of the mercy rule.
In the box, DiFilippo led the way with four knocks, Berry was 3-of-4 while both Smith and Andraos each had two hits apiece. Andraos (5-2) threw five innings and gave up no runs on two hits with four strikeouts and no walks. This season, the Malvern, Pa. native has nearly half as many wins as she did all of last season (11) and with 25 punchouts, she is almost halfway to her total from 2013 in that department (51).
GAME TWO RECAP
In game two, neither team scored until the fourth inning but it was the visitors that struck first. DiFilippo led off the frame with a single up the middle and Berry followed with a bunt single that put runners on first and second. After a sacrifice bunt from
Ashley Cantiello, Smith came through once again, this time with a two-run single through the left side.
DiFilippo gave Millersville a 3-0 lead in the fifth with an RBI single to left center that pushed Sheffield across the plate, but the Marauders wouldn't score again.
The Bobcats scored five runs on five hits in the fith and one more on two hits in the sixth en route to the three-run victory. Millersville stranded six runners in game two while Lees-McRae left nine on the bases.
Smith was 3-for-3 with two RBIs and DiFilippo had two more hits in the second game (2-of-4) with a run scored and an RBI.
Amanda Wink (1-4) was saddled with the loss after going 4.1 innings and gave up four earned runs on six hits while striking out four batters and walking two. In relief, Cantiello went 1.2 innings while giving up two earned runs on four hits. The junior lefty recorded a pair of strikeouts and didn't walk a single batter.
The Marauders are at West Virginia State for a doubleheader on Friday beginning at 3 p.m.
