Andraos Tosses Perfect Game; Millersville Splits to Open Weekend

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Salem, Va. - Brianna Andraos threw a five-inning perfect game to lead Millersville past Franklin Pierce 8-0 but Walsh (Ohio) shutout the Marauders in their second game of the day, 5-0.

Millersville (3-5) took the first contest against the Ravens (0-1) thanks to the mercy rule along with Andraos' brilliant performance in the circle. The Marauders' bats were hot all game in their first ever game against Franklin Pierce with eight runs, 14 hits, seven RBIs, three doubles, and two triples. That marked the first time Millersville had hit more than one triple in a game since April 14, 2010 against Lincoln (Pa.). In the Marauders first ever meeting with the Cavaliers, Walsh (8-6) scored five runs on 10 hits and held Millersville scoreless.

GAME ONE RECAP

In the top of the first, Jordan Sheffield led off with a single to right field and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Danielle DiFilippo. Gabbie Berry then stepped in and doubled down the right field line to push Sheffield across the plate. Ashley Cantiello followed with an RBI single back up the middle that brought in Berry and Millersville was up 2-0 before Franklin Pierce had even seen a pitch.

In the top of the third, Berry and Cantiello were at it again with a pair of one-out singles that put runners on first and second for Heather Lutz. Lutz came through with an RBI double to left-center and Berry crossed the dish while Cantiello advanced to third. The next batter, Brittany Smith, reached on an error by the third baseman and Cantiello scored to make it 4-0 in favor of the Black and Gold.

With Sheffield standing on third and two down in the top of the fourth, Berry hit her first career triple down the right field line and Sheffield came in to score. Cantiello then followed Berry with a hit for the third-consecutive time with an RBI single down the left field line.

Smith hit her first career triple to lead off the fifth and later scored on an RBI double off the bat of Stephanie Kulp. Maria Spinosa brought home Kulp on a single up the middle to give Millersville an 8-0 advantage as it was in the final score.

Andraos (2-2) struck out five batters and relied heavily on the groundball as seven of the 15 outs came on the ground. It is the first time a Marauder pitcher hasn't given up a hit since Sarah Bertoni did so on March 20, 2012 against Philadelphia. Berry was a perfect 3-for-3 on the game with three runs scored, two RBIs and a walk. Cantiello also had three hits (3-of-4) to go with two RBIs and a run scored. Sheffield had two hits and scored twice while Spinosa chipped in two hits as well.

GAME TWO RECAP

Walsh scored one run in the second and two runs in both the fifth and sixth frames, respectively, but the Marauders were unable to find the scoreboard and managed just five hits while stranding eight runners on the basepaths.

Amanda Wink (0-3) got the start and threw 5.1 innings while giving up five runs, all earned, on 10 hits. The sophomore hurler also struck out and walked two batters apiece. In relief, Cantiello was perfect over the final inning and two-thirds.

Cantiello was the only Marauder with multiple hits as she went 2-for-3 in the box.

Saturday, Millersville continues its play in the West Virginia Wesleyan Tournament against Malone (1 p.m.) and Chowan (3 p.m.).
